The facts
The White House announced on Friday that it will ease tariffs on some Canadian goods, including plywood, paper products, machinery, and refrigeration equipment, effective October 30. This move comes less than two weeks before the US midterm elections. Republican Senator Susan Collins, facing a competitive race in Maine, stated she had lobbied for these exemptions, which she said would benefit her state's agricultural sector. The US had previously imposed a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods in August after trade talks collapsed. Canada responded with its own countermeasures. The White House stated the action reflects President Donald Trump's efforts to defend American workers and ensure fair trade, while also noting that tariffs would be introduced on other items like carpets and waste products. Canada's internal trade minister, Dominic LeBlanc, indicated readiness to work towards a mutually beneficial trading relationship.
Our take
So let's get this straight: after spending months crowing about how he was the toughest negotiator since God told Moses to fuck off, Donald Trump has just folded like a cheap lawn chair because one Republican senator got scared she might lose her job. Susan Collins, who is apparently so important that the entire White House trade policy now hinges on her not pissing herself in Maine, whined about tariffs, and the big, bad 'Tariff Man' immediately started un-fucking the very tariffs he imposed. It’s a masterclass in cowardice. This prick spent the summer slapping a 50 percent tax on twenty billion dollars of Canadian goods because he couldn't get his way, then turned around and said, 'Oh, but not this plywood, or this paper, or this machinery - my friend Susan needs those.' What a pathetic, transparent grift.
The timing is the most hilarious, desperate bullshit imaginable. They're doing this less than two weeks before an election where Trump's cult is about to get its ass handed to it. So the entire 'principle' of defending American workers - which was always just a slogan to make his dumb base feel tough - gets tossed out the window to try and save one seat. He’s not even trying to hide it. The White House statement is a masterpiece of ass-covering, claiming this 'reflects the President's efforts' while quietly adding new tariffs on fucking carpets and waste products, as if that makes up for the humiliating retreat. Yes, we’re sure Canadian waste imports were the real threat to national security all along, you clown.
And what about the Canadians? They watched this whole shitshow, imposed their own countermeasures like adults, and now get to see the 'stable genius' unravel his own policy in a panicked scramble. Their trade minister politely said they're ready to work towards something 'mutually beneficial,' which is diplomatic code for 'We are laughing at you, you absolute cunt.' Trump’s trade war was always a vanity project, a way for a bloated, insecure bastard to pretend he was doing something hard. Now it’s just a fire sale of his own credibility, sold off piece by piece to bail out any Republican who might cry. The only thing being defended here is Susan Collins's political career, and the only fair trade is that America gets exposed, again, as being run by a spineless dickhead who will abandon any fight if it means a slightly better headline. What a fucking embarrassment.
