The facts
The Guardian reports that Pete Hoekstra, the US ambassador to Canada, suggested at a closed-door meeting that Canada could be blamed if Republicans perform poorly in upcoming midterm elections. According to CTV News, Hoekstra told business leaders that if swing races in states like Maine and Michigan go to Democrats, it could make things harder for Canada because Donald Trump might try to blame the loss on it. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed disappointment, stating there was no merit to the claims of interference and that he was disappointed by the envoy's suggestions. The US embassy denied Hoekstra said Canada would face blame, stating his remarks were taken out of context and that Americans decide elections based on issues important to them. Hoekstra has previously accused Canadian officials of interfering in US elections, citing criticism of tariffs in US media and an anti-tariff advertisement by the province of Ontario. Roland Paris, a foreign affairs adviser, called the remarks extraordinary and suggested they might be an effort to "manufacture a pretext for the Trump administration’s own political difficulties."
Our take
What a fucking clown. Pete Hoekstra, the Trump-appointed ambassador whose job is presumably to be a diplomat, is out here in private meetings playing a pathetic game of geopolitical hot potato. This absolute cunt is trying to pre-emptively blame the entire nation of Canada if his own party, the Republicans, can't manage to win enough seats in the midterms. Not because of their own policies, their own candidates, or the fact that their Dear Leader is a walking constitutional crisis, but because Canada might get the blame. What a galaxy-brained dickhead move. He's basically setting up a 'the dog ate my homework' excuse for Donald Trump, but the dog is a sovereign country with universal healthcare and polite citizens. The sheer, unadulterated cowardice of it is staggering.
And of course, when this bullshit leaks out, the US embassy immediately pisses its pants and starts screaming about 'context.' Oh, his remarks were taken out of context! What's the context, Pete? Were you explaining how to be a useless, sycophantic prick to a room full of business leaders? Were you giving a masterclass on how to pre-emptively whine about losing before the votes are even cast? The only context here is that you're a grifter who got a fancy title and decided the best use of your time was to manufacture a foreign scapegoat for your domestic political failures. It's like a kid who kicks his own soccer ball into the neighbor's yard and then blames the neighbor's tree for making him lose the game.
This isn't even his first time pulling this shit. He's previously accused Canadian officials of election interference because they had the fucking audacity to criticize Trump's tariffs in the media and because the province of Ontario ran an ad against said tariffs. In Hoekstra's tiny, terrified mind, a province buying an ad is apparently the moral equivalent of Russian hackers. It's a level of paranoid, self-important vanity usually reserved for tinpot dictators and people who think the CIA is monitoring their toaster. Roland Paris, a former foreign affairs adviser, nailed it: this is about 'manufacturing a pretext' for the Trump administration's own colossal fuck-ups. Hoekstra isn't a diplomat; he's a pissy little stagehand trying to rig the scenery so his boss doesn't look like the asshole he is when the whole production goes tits up.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was 'disappointed.' That's Canadian for 'what a fucking dickhead.' The whole episode is a perfect, rancid little turd of an insight into how this administration operates: find the most ridiculous external target, point a trembling finger, and hope your base is too stupid or too angry to notice you're the ones who set the house on fire. Ambassador Hoekstra, you're a disgrace to your office and a piss-poor excuse for a statesman. Go blame Canada for your tiny dick energy.
