Yvette Cooper Decides Not to Abolish the NHS's Patient Feedback Department After Realizing That's What It Does

The Health Secretary's genius plan to scrap the independent patient watchdog, because who needs to hear complaints about no dentists and endless ADHD waits, collapses under the weight of everyone else in Parliament pointing and laughing.

The facts

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper has abandoned plans to abolish Healthwatch England, the independent patient champion for the NHS. The decision follows criticism from Labour, Conservative, and Liberal Democrat MPs. The government now intends to retain and strengthen Healthwatch and its 150 local branches, which collect and analyze patient feedback on NHS services. Healthwatch was slated for abolition as part of a health service reorganization, with its functions intended to transfer to NHS regional integrated care boards and local councils. Cooper stated that patient voices must influence change and that Healthwatch England and Local Healthwatch will be strengthened. The reversal is one of several government U-turns on the health bill. Healthwatch has reported issues including reduced access to NHS-funded dental care and long waits for ADHD assessments. The Local Government Association had warned that abolition could lead to NHS organizations appearing to self-assess.

Our take

Fucking hell. In a stunning display of bureaucratic enlightenment, Health Secretary Yvette Cooper has discovered that the department which listens to patients might, in fact, be quite useful. Her galaxy-brain initiative to abolish Healthwatch England - the one outfit that bothers to document the NHS's myriad fuck-ups - has been shelved because MPs from all three major parties told her it was the dumbest shit they'd ever heard. This isn't a policy reversal; it's a public intervention for a politician who tried to solve a noise complaint by smashing the fire alarm.

The sheer, breathtaking vanity of it. This clown looked at an organization whose entire job is to say 'people can't see a dentist' and 'children are waiting years for an assessment' and thought, 'You know what the problem is here? The reporting.' Her masterplan was to hand these crucial listening functions over to the NHS's own regional boards and local councils, the very institutions currently presiding over the crumbling service. The Local Government Association, in a moment of crystalline clarity, pointed out this would let the NHS mark its own fucking homework. But Yvette, vision unclouded by reality, charged ahead until the collective parliamentary 'are you a complete and utter cunt?' reached deafening levels.

Now she's performing a pirouette of pure bullshit, claiming she'll 'strengthen' the body she just tried to strangle. She doesn't get to posture about 'patient voices' after she attempted to perform a laryngectomy on the national patient voice. This is the political equivalent of shitting your pants in public, then announcing a bold new commitment to personal hygiene. The only thing being strengthened is our understanding that Cooper's default setting is reactive cowardice, where the only good idea is one she's been bullied into having.

Let's be specific about the pathetic calculus here. Healthwatch reports on the catastrophic failures of the service Cooper is supposed to be running: no dental care, years-long waits for vital diagnoses. Instead of using that feedback to, I don't know, maybe fix the problems, her first instinct was to abolish the feedback. It's like a restaurant owner responding to a bad hygiene rating by sacking the food inspector. The sheer, small-dick energy of trying to look strong by silencing the people pointing out your weakness is a special kind of political incontinence. This U-turn isn't wisdom; it's the desperate back-pedalling of a dickhead who got caught trying to pull a fast one and now has to pretend she meant to put the patient champion back on the shelf all along.
