Western States Face Water Crisis as 1970s Intake Becomes Inoperable

Lake Mead’s historic 1970 intake can no longer draw water because lake levels have fallen, and officials describe the situation as “crisis‑adjacent” amid record low reservoir capacities.

The facts

Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the two largest reservoirs in the United States, are at historic lows, holding roughly 25 percent of their combined capacity. Mandatory federal cuts to Colorado River deliveries will soon affect Arizona, Nevada and California. Colby Pellegrino, deputy general manager of resources for the Southern Nevada Water Authority, explained that the original 1970 intake built to supply Las Vegas is no longer operable because the lake has dropped below the structure’s intake level. The authority spent more than $1 billion in the early 2000s on a new, deeper intake and a pumping station as a safeguard. Kyle Roerink, senior adviser for the Great Basin Water Network, said decades of over‑use combined with a 26‑year megadrought have left the reservoirs at about a quarter of capacity, likening them to a bank account on the brink of bankruptcy. The Colorado River has lost roughly 20 percent of its flow since 2000, and a further decline at Lake Mead could cut Hoover Dam’s hydropower output by up to 70 percent. In Phoenix, water‑resources adviser Max Wilson noted that the cuts translate to roughly a 50 percent reduction in the Central Arizona Project, prompting the city to invest billions in new water‑recycling facilities that will produce about seven million gallons of reclaimed water per day.

Our take

Well, well, well, look at the mess we’ve made of a river that was never meant to be a bottomless fucking Slurpee. The Colorado River is so drained that the 1970 intake, once the pride of Las Vegas, is now a useless relic because the water it was supposed to suck up has receded like a bad hangover. Pellegrino’s “crisis‑adjacent” label is bureaucratic code for we’re knee‑deep in a disaster and we’re trying not to scare the tourists. You built a pipe that can’t reach the water - that’s not adjacent to a crisis, that *is* the crisis, standing on your doorstep with a middle finger raised. Roerink’s bank‑account analogy hits the nail on the head: we treated the reservoirs like an infinite Monopoly fund while the real world set the vault on fire during a 26‑year megadrought. Losing 20 percent of the river’s flow since 2000 isn’t a minor accounting error; it’s a fifth of a continent’s lifeblood evaporated by climate‑driven heat and reckless over‑use. Now the federal government finally steps in, slapping mandatory cuts on Arizona, Nevada and California, while Phoenix scrambles to fund billion‑dollar recycling plants that will turn its own piss into drinkable water. That’s a poetic, expensive reminder that the free‑flowing river buffet is closed and the only menu left is drink your own waste. And if Lake Mead drops any further, Hoover Dam could lose up to 70 percent of its hydropower - turning a marvel of engineering into a useless concrete slab. Roerink’s warning that the era of cheap, unlimited water is over is as obvious as a desert sunrise. The fantasy of infinite growth in a desert has been busted, and the bill - billions in recycling infrastructure, mandatory cuts, and soaring water prices - has arrived. The adaptation will be costly, but it’s the price we pay for decades of short‑sighted, greedy water‑pissing. The river may be turning to piss, but at least we finally realized we need to stop treating it like a goddamn frat party keg.
