The facts
In a first amended complaint filed Oct. 29, 2026 (U.S. v. State of Alaska, No. 3:26‑cv‑00376), the United States alleges that operatives aligned with Mary Peltola ran a “Ballot Composition Project” to recruit a spoiler candidate, Daniel J. Sullivan, to confuse voters. The filing says Daniel J. Sullivan, a longtime Peltola supporter who had never run for office, filed on May 29, 2026 after being contacted by a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee operative, Jerid Kurtz. In the Aug. 28 primary, Peltola earned 49.5% of the vote, Senator Dan Sullivan 41.4%, Daniel J. Sullivan 2.5%, and Gerald Heikes 1.1%. The complaint warns that the spoiler could siphon votes from Senator Sullivan, potentially handing victory to Peltola. Alaskans For Mary and the DSCC later filed a Rule 11 answer denying knowledge of the scheme, which the filing says contradicts internal communications.
Our take
Fucking hell, they didn’t just pull a stunt - they gave it a corporate‑sounding project name and treated the ballot like a cheat code. The “Ballot Composition Project” reads like a PowerPoint slide from a shady startup, not a democratic process. They found a clueless Dan Sullivan, handed him a candidacy as a favor, and watched voters stumble into the wrong box like it was a prank at a high school party. The internal chat jokes about “other Dan won” and heart emojis are the kind of juvenile bragging that belongs on a frat house wall, not in a federal complaint. Then, when the DOJ knocked on the door, the same crew filed a pleading claiming they knew nothing about the purpose of their own scheme. That’s the political equivalent of a burglar filing a police report saying, I didn’t know the house was occupied. Governor Mike Dunleavy’s promise to investigate is the only thing that might turn this farce into actual accountability. Until then, the voters are left to wonder whether their ballot was a genuine choice or just a glitch in a rigged video game. The whole affair is a reminder that when political operatives treat democracy as a sandbox, the only thing they’re really building is a house of cards that’s about to collapse under its own weight. It’s a felony masquerading as a campaign, and every architect of this plot should be sweating until they’re either behind bars or explaining to their grandkids why they helped turn a free election into a rigged cheat sheet.
