NASA Doles Out Space Crumbs in Pathetic $12 Million 'Initiative'

The agency's M-STAR program slings a measly million bucks each to 12 universities to tackle shit like 'rover-carried deployables' and 'regolith properties,' proving NASA's grand Artemis vision is now a fucking grant-writing workshop.

The facts

NASA announced on October 15, 2026, that it has awarded $12 million to 12 U.S. institutions through its Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) Space Technology Artemis Research (M-STAR) initiative. Each selected institution will receive up to $1 million to enhance their scientific and engineering capabilities, foster faculty and student engagement in aerospace research, and improve their competitiveness for future research awards. Alicia Baturoni Cortez, MUREP program manager, stated that these investments create opportunities for students and faculty to build skills and infrastructure while assisting NASA in addressing technology gaps for long-duration Moon and Mars operations. The M-STAR initiative supports NASA's mission to develop innovative technologies for space transportation, human and robotic exploration, and the space economy. The funded projects include research on adaptive vision-language-action models for multi-robot collaboration, aerothermal simulation for Artemis, radiation instrumentation, rover-carried deployables, regolith properties at cryogenic conditions, AI models for autonomous path planning, radiation-tolerant composites for nuclear thermal propulsion, regenerative environmental systems, lunar spectrometers, AI/ML for propulsion hardware repair, extreme-environment batteries, and generative AI for systems engineering.

Our take

Well, holy shit. NASA, the organization that once put men on the moon, has apparently decided its new mission is to run a fucking community college science fair. They just 'awarded' - and I use that term like you'd award a toddler a participation sticker - $12 million to a dozen schools. That's a cool million each, which in the world of space exploration buys you about one slightly used toilet seat from a retired shuttle and a heartfelt 'good luck.' This isn't funding a moonshot; it's funding a dozen desperate PhD students to Google 'what is regolith' and write a paper about it.

Let's look at this bullshit portfolio of 'research.' We've got 'adaptive vision-language-action models for multi-robot collaboration.' Sounds fancy! In reality, it's probably some grad student trying to teach a Roomba to say 'ouch' when it bumps into a wall. Then there's 'radiation-tolerant composites for nuclear thermal propulsion.' Great! So for a million bucks, they might invent a slightly better paperweight that doesn't melt immediately near a reactor. This is the cutting-edge tech that's gonna get us to Mars? We'll be lucky if it gets us a functional coffee maker in a low-earth orbit office park.

The real kick in the cunt is the program manager's statement. Alicia Baturoni Cortez said this 'creates opportunities for students and faculty to build skills.' No shit, Alicia. It also creates an opportunity for NASA to outsource its actual fucking job to undergrads for bargain-basement prices. Instead of building the technology itself, the agency is now a glorified venture capitalist sprinkling pocket change on academia and hoping something, anything, sticks. It's a pathetic admission that the real engineering brains have either left the building or are too busy managing subcontractors to do any real work.

So here we are. The Artemis generation, ladies and gentlemen. Not rockets, but 'workforce development.' Not innovation, but 'improving competitiveness for future research awards.' It's a self-licking ice cream cone of grant applications and buzzword bingo. They're funding 'generative AI for systems engineering' which is undoubtedly a program that will auto-generate the next round of equally useless grant proposals. This isn't a space program; it's a fucking pyramid scheme built on academic vanity and administrative bloat. Pour that million into studying 'cryogenic regolith properties' all you want. The only thing that's frozen solid is NASA's ambition, preserved in the bullshit permafrost of bureaucracy.
