The facts
The Guardian reported that Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds did not contest claims that Chancellor John Healey will pause the process of equalizing the minimum wage for workers under 21 with the rate for those 21 and over. The Times reported that both rates would increase by approximately 3.9%, from £10.85 to £11.27 for 18-to-20-year-olds and from £12.71 to £13.20 for those 21 and older. Labour's manifesto had pledged to unify these rates during the current parliament. Reynolds stated that equalizing the rates remains a commitment and will occur over time, considering labor market conditions. The Green Party accused Labour of breaking its manifesto promise, with co-deputy leader Mothin Ali stating that young people should receive the same wage for the same job, regardless of age.
Our take
Well, well, well. It turns out that Labour’s grand manifesto pledge to give young workers the same minimum wage as everyone else was just a load of election-time bullshit. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, a man whose entire public persona is built on being the reasonable one, has been caught red-handed refusing to deny that his own Chancellor, John Healey, is about to hit pause on the whole fucking idea. What a gutless, spineless performance. Instead of a straight answer, this prick offered a symphony of bureaucratic cowardice, mumbling about how equalizing the rates is still a 'commitment' that will happen 'over time' while 'considering labor market conditions.' Translation: we lied to get your votes, you gullible little shits, and now we’re going to drag our feet until you forget we ever promised anything.
The numbers are a perfect monument to this government’s contempt. Under the reported plan, the 18-to-20-year-old rate would crawl up from 10.85 pounds to 11.27 pounds, while the adult rate goes from 12.71 pounds to 13.20 pounds. That’s a 3.9% increase for both, preserving the exact same gap in raw cash. So young people are still getting systematically stiffed for the same fucking work, but hey, at least their pay cut is growing at the same percentage rate! What a generous, forward-thinking policy from the party of 'fairness.' They’ve managed to turn a pledge for pay equality into a lesson in economic gaslighting.
Of course, the only people with the balls to call this out are the Greens, with co-deputy leader Mothin Ali pointing out the bleeding obvious: young people should get the same wage for the same job. But in Labour’s calculus, young workers aren’t people; they’re a convenient pool of cheap labor to be exploited, then patronized with empty promises about 'future commitments.' Reynolds’s entire act is that of a managerial dickhead who thinks using the word 'considering' makes him sound thoughtful instead of exposed as a two-faced liar. He’s the human embodiment of a non-denial denial, a walking, talking press release designed to obscure a basic betrayal.
So let’s be clear: this isn’t a 'pause' or a 'reconsideration.' It’s Labour breaking a core promise within weeks of taking power because they think the people it affects - young, often precarious workers - won’t kick up enough of a stink. It’s a calculated, cynical move by a bunch of cowards who figured they could get away with it. The manifesto is now officially toilet paper, and Jonathan Reynolds is the smug bastard calmly wiping his arse with it on national television. What a bunch of absolute cunts.
