FDA to Menopause: Fuck It, We Ball

Agency strips dire cancer and dementia warnings off estrogen patches, shrugs at advisory panels, cites 'updated evidence' while patients grapple with shortages.

The facts

On Friday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that three estrogen patches used for menopause treatment will no longer carry black‑box warnings for cardiovascular disease, breast cancer and dementia. The agency said updated evidence shows the risk‑benefit profile differs for many healthy women under 60 and within ten years of menopause onset. The FDA did not convene an advisory committee for this decision and offered few scientific details in the press briefing. The change follows the removal of black‑box warnings from six other menopause treatments in February, a move that coincided with reported shortages of patches. Experts such as Reshma Ramachandran, an assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine, warned that the lack of transparency could mislead patients. FDA officials, including Sarah Ibrahim of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, acknowledged patient frustration with stock‑outs and said the agency is working with manufacturers to increase production and improve access.

Our take

Well, shit. If you’ve been sweating through a hot flash while staring at a box warning that this sticky little patch might also give you a side of brain rot and a heart attack, congratulations: the federal babysitters at the FDA have decided you can stop worrying your pretty little head. In a move that reeks of bureaucratic panic and supply‑chain desperation, the FDA just yeeted the black‑box warnings - its most serious alarm bell - off three more estrogen patches. Why? Because the agency says the evidence is “updated,” and because patients are screaming about shortages, not because it can’t keep the patches on shelves. They didn’t bother with any of those pesky advisory committees this time, the little peer‑review clown cars they usually trot out to pretend they give a shit. Nope. Just a press briefing where they basically said, Trust us, bitches, and moved on. It’s like watching a mechanic remove the ‘BRAKES MAY FAIL’ sticker from your car because, hey, the brakes are failing so often we’re just gonna call that a feature now. Assistant professor Reshma Ramachandran had the audacity to suggest this lack of transparency might be, oh I don’t know, a fucking problem? That patients might be misled? Imagine! Women might think a drug that once came with a giant screaming skull and crossbones is now just a gentle, risk‑free lil’ helper. The FDA’s Sarah Ibrahim actually admitted demand “increased significantly” after they pulled the same bullshit with six other treatments back in February. So the strategy is clear: when you can’t meet demand for a drug with scary warnings, just delete the warnings and call it science. Presto! Supply crisis solved. You absolute cunts. This is regulatory whack‑a‑mole played with human health. They’re not fixing the shortage; they’re just handing out permission slips to ignore the minefield because the line to cross it is too long. What’s next? Removing side‑effect labels from chemo because the infusion chairs are all full? Fuck off. This is the administrative equivalent of seeing a ‘BRIDGE OUT’ sign and, instead of fixing the bridge, painting over the sign because the detour is backed up. Enjoy the plunge, ladies. The FDA sure as shit isn’t looking.
