The facts
Beijing's annual independent queer film festival was canceled shortly before its scheduled start on Friday, October 30, 2026, due to alleged sustained harassment from authorities. Organizers announced the cancellation on Instagram, citing increased pressure through repeated phone calls from police in recent weeks. Founded in 2001, the festival was mainland China's only public forum for LGBTQ+ films and discussions. Maya Wang, deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch, stated that independent activities outside party-approved spaces face intensifying scrutiny and harassment under the current Chinese government. The Beijing Public Security Bureau could not be reached for comment. This cancellation follows similar incidents, including the closure of the Beijing Independent film festival in 2014 and the cancellation of LGBTQ+ film screenings at the Institut Français in Beijing in June 2026 due to police harassment.
Our take
Well, here’s the People’s Police putting in the fucking overtime, isn’t it? Instead of busting crime, a whole precinct apparently got assigned to speed-dial some film nerds until they cried uncle. What a heroic use of state resources. The festival organizers didn’t get raided by stormtroopers; they got nagged to death by a bunch of bureaucrats with nothing better to do than make repeated phone calls. It’s the most pathetic form of oppression imaginable: harassment via fucking customer service complaints department. The state’s big scare tactic is being put on hold for an operator. Pathetic. For 25 years, this was the only public forum for this stuff in the whole goddamn mainland. Now it’s shuttered because the authorities are such insecure little pricks that the mere idea of people watching movies together gives them a collective aneurysm. They can’t stand a single space they don’t personally hand-sanitize for ideological purity. The party line is so fragile it can be shattered by a projector bulb. And let’s not pretend this is some isolated dick move. They did the same shit to the Institut Français screenings a few months back. It’s a pattern of behavior from a government that acts like a jealous, controlling boyfriend monitoring its partner’s Instagram DMs. They see anything independent, anything that smells even faintly of unscripted human connection, and their tiny, bureaucratic brains short-circuit into a frenzy of panic-dialing.So congratulations, you absolute bastards. You’ve successfully protected the motherland from the grave threat of… subtitles and discussion panels. The only queer culture you’ll permit is the deeply closeted kind that never speaks its name. What a vibrant, confident superpower you’re building - one sustained by the relentless, soul-crushing power of the fucking telephone. How’s that for a legacy? Assholes.Meanwhile, the Beijing Public Security Bureau is 'unreachable for comment.' Of course they are. They’re probably still on the phone, terrorizing a book club somewhere. Useless cunts. The festival’s canceled, but the state’s long-running tragicomedy of fragile authoritarianism gets another standing ovation from an audience of one.
