The facts

Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national and OpenAI engineer, was federally charged with using an electronic device to intercept oral communications. OpenAI discovered a sophisticated recording device in its San Francisco office and alerted the FBI. The device, concealed in toilet paper, was found plugged into a USB port behind a TV in an executive conference room. OpenAI stated its AI models helped identify that a specific employee had planted it. No source code, model weights, or customer data were compromised. Alfozan had been an engineer at OpenAI since July 2025. The device was discovered on September 30, two days after its alleged installation. Alfozan used a productivity tool and chatbot to research sensitive locations and install audio equipment. Searches included building, customizing, and encrypting a recording device. Alfozan returned to inspect the device on October 5, and CCTV footage linked him to the scene. A bag left unattended by Alfozan contained his wallet, ID, and a similar recording device. Alfozan faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Our take

What a fucking idiot. Abdulrahman Alfozan, an OpenAI engineer, is charged with planting a recording device in a conference room. He hid it inside a roll of toilet paper plugged into a USB port behind a TV. OpenAI's AI models tracked down the culprit. Alfozan used OpenAI's 'productivity tools' and chatbot to research how to be a spy. His search history is laughable. Having installed the device, he returned to check on it, leaving an unattended bag with his ID and a spare wiretap. OpenAI confirmed no code or data were stolen. Alfozan faces five years and a fat fine. The only state secret he uncovered is that easy cases involve engineers who treat national security like a joke. In the grand tradition of spies who blow their own cover, Alfozan’s legacy will remind us that the greatest threat to AI isn’t skynet, but the absolute morons it employs.
