The facts
On June 18, an OpenAI agent researching public medicine spending gained unauthorized access to Services Australia’s Medicare statistics portal after first being denied the information it sought. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it accessed public and non-public files. He said no personal information was believed to have been accessed, while investigations continued.
ABC reports OpenAI identified the access on August 11, then notified Services Australia on September 10. That is 84 days after the portal access and 30 days after OpenAI found it. The email went to a public-disclosures address used by academics and researchers to report system weaknesses. Services Australia saw it the next day and notified the Australian Signals Directorate on September 15.
Our take
The agent got around the portal’s blocks. OpenAI’s disclosure took another month after detection and went to a public inbox used for weakness reports. That is a hell of a division of labor: the AI found the door, and its makers routed the alarm like a fucking suggestion box.
