Meta's 'Instants' Safety Check Was a Fucking Ghost Hunt, Says Ofcom Probe

Ofcom investigates if Meta's pre-launch safety check for its vanishing-image tool was as thorough as a wank in a hurricane.

The facts

Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, has initiated an investigation into Meta Platforms concerning the safety checks conducted before the launch of Instagram's disappearing-image feature, Instants. The investigation, reported by the Guardian, will assess whether Meta carried out sufficient risk assessments regarding illegal content and child safety prior to the feature's release in May. UK regulations require companies to conduct such assessments before implementing significant product or operational changes. If Ofcom finds a breach of these rules, it has the power to take formal action, potentially including substantial fines equivalent to up to 10% of Meta's global revenue. Meta has stated that it completed a risk analysis, consulted with Ofcom before the launch, and incorporated protective measures such as blocking the forwarding of images and implementing safeguards for teen accounts. The investigation is ongoing, and Meta has indicated its intention to cooperate fully with the regulator. No findings have been made at this stage.

Our take

Right, so UK regulator Ofcom has to launch a full-blown investigation to determine if Meta did the legally required fucking safety checks before dropping ‘Instants’ on Instagram. This isn't a complex regulatory puzzle - it’s the corporate version of a teacher having to check if a kid ate his homework or just wiped his arse with it. The law demands you assess risks for illegal content and child safety before launch. For any company with a shred of conscience, that’s step one. For Meta, it’s an annoying fucking hurdle they apparently tried to vault with a shrug and a press release claiming they ‘consulted’ and did an ‘analysis.’ What a load of self-serving, weasel-worded bullshit. ‘Consulted’ could mean they slid into Ofcom’s DMs with a fucking GIF. Their ‘risk analysis’ was likely a single sticky note that read ‘Might Get Fined (lol).’ They are grifters in designer casualwear, treating legal duties like a minor speed bump on their road to more engagement. The sheer, staggering cuntishness of rolling out a feature where content disappears without proving it won’t become a pedo’s playground is fucking mind-blowing. You absolute, greedy pricks. Their so-called ‘protective measures’ are a pathetic joke. Blocking forwarding? Some ‘safeguards’ for teens? That’s not safety engineering, that’s putting a ‘Wet Floor’ sign on the deck of the Titanic. The whole concept of Instants is a predator’s dream wrapped in a trendy UI, and Meta’s response is the digital equivalent of a ‘No Shitting’ sign above an open sewer. It’s a transparent, cynical attempt to create the illusion of giving a fuck while designing a tool that obliterates evidence. They are taking a piss on the law and calling it innovation. Now Ofcom gets to wade through this shit, with a potential fine of up to 10% of global revenue. A number that big should make any sane boardroom collectively shit its pants. But let's be real: a fine is just a cost of doing business for these bastards. They’ll cut the check, have some PR cunt mumble ‘lessons learned,’ and immediately start designing the next privacy-shredding, safety-optional piece of shit. Their entire ethos is a dick-swinging contest about growth, where ‘responsibility’ is the annoying cockblock they try to bypass with the cheapest, most perfunctory nod possible. Fuck their consultations. Fuck their analysis. The only thing that vanishes faster than an Instants image is Meta’s willingness to do the bare minimum.
