The facts
On October 30, 2026, U.S. Representatives Brittany Pettersen, Joyce Beatty, and Robin Kelly, along with 64 other lawmakers, sent a letter to ICE acting director David Venturella demanding disclosure of miscarriage, stillbirth, and pregnancy-related hospitalization data for detained immigrants. This action followed a Guardian investigation that revealed ICE lacked records for these outcomes from October 2025 through June 2026, despite recording 18 miscarriages in the prior nine months. Internal ICE documents attributed the data gap to a change in medical billing providers, causing delays in claims processing. The lawmakers also questioned ICE's adherence to a 2021 directive limiting the detention of pregnant individuals and asked about steps taken to recover the missing data. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not confirm receipt of the letter but disputed claims of substandard care. Lawmakers set a November 6 response deadline.
Our take
What a staggering display of bureaucratic cowardice. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an agency with the budget and mandate to track human beings across a continent, now claims it can't track a basic medical outcome because it changed fucking billing companies. You useless, paper-shuffling pricks. You recorded 18 miscarriages in the nine months before October 2025, then suddenly the system goes dark for another nine months because of a provider switch? That's not a data gap, that's a fucking black hole of accountability, conveniently timed to swallow any evidence of the horrific care you provide. The agency's excuse is that processing claims was delayed. Right. So the pregnancy ended, the person was hospitalized, but the only record that matters to ICE is the invoice, and when that got lost in the mail, the entire human tragedy vanished from their spreadsheets. How perfectly symbolic. A woman's miscarriage is just an unpaid claim to these bureaucratic bastards. Now 67 lawmakers have to write a fucking letter begging acting director David Venturella to please, please check under the couch cushions for the missing miscarriage data. He probably won't even confirm he got the letter, just like his flacks at DHS won't confirm shit except to say the care is great, trust them. They set a deadline of November 6 for a response. Here's a prediction: the response will be a 20-page PDF explaining the complexities of medical billing migration, a promise to do better, and exactly zero numbers about how many pregnancies ended in disaster on their watch. This is the agency's core competency: brutal, efficient enforcement when it comes to locking people up, and utter, weaponized incompetence when it comes to the consequences. They can find a person for deportation using a decades-old traffic ticket, but a contemporaneous miscarriage in their own detention center? Poof. Lost in the mail. It's the most pathetic cover story since 'the dog ate my homework,' except the homework was a human life and the dog is a multi-billion dollar federal police force. They are not just assholes; they are meticulously negligent assholes, building a system where cruelty is automated and accountability is an optional software module that never gets installed. Fuck every last manager who signed off on that provider change without a backup plan. Fuck every spokesperson who parrots the line about high-quality care while the receipts for the opposite are allegedly stuck in some accounting purgatory. They are administrative cunts, hiding behind spreadsheets and service contracts while real people suffer. The only thing more disgusting than their conduct is their paper-thin excuse for it.
