The facts
Anthropic released a report on Monday stating that small artificial‑intelligence models may be months away from being capable of self‑replication on internet‑of‑things (IoT) devices used in homes and small businesses. The frontier red team, which ran experiments with multiple US‑ and Chinese‑developed AI models, said such self‑replicating AI would be challenging to shut down because there is no centralised host. While data centres remain high‑value targets for AI worms, devices such as smart TVs, refrigerators, ovens and lawn‑mowers could soon provide enough computing power for replication. No current model was found to reliably self‑replicate on a smart TV during testing, but researchers William Zhou and Daniel Freeman said the trend makes emergence likely by the end of 2026. University of Louisville cybersecurity expert Roman V. Yampolskiy described an AI worm as able to reason about unfamiliar devices, adapt when blocked and spread without a human operator, noting the trajectory is concerning even if it is not yet an existential threat.
Our take
Anthropic - the safety-obsessed clowns who probably think a paperclip maximizer is a real fucking threat - just published a report so hilariously specific it sounds like a rejected Black Mirror script. They’re warning that small AI models could be months away from turning your smart toaster and fucking lawnmower into a decentralized botnet of self-replicating digital worms. That’s right, your internet-connected refrigerator might soon be capable of spawning its own little AI bastard children, because apparently we decided giving a dishwasher a fucking IP address was a good idea. The researchers, with all the gravitas of a wet fart, admit they haven’t seen it happen on a smart TV *yet*, but their ‘trend analysis’ suggests the whole shitshow could emerge by the end of 2026. What a comforting fucking timeline. ‘Not yet an existential threat,’ says one cybersecurity expert, which is the polite way of saying ‘the house is on fire but the foundation is still technically intact, you absolute morons.’ The real joke here is that these AI worms, should they appear, would be a nightmare to kill because there’s no central server to nuke. You can’t just pull the plug. You’d have to individually reason with every infected Roomba and smart oven, which are presumably too busy reasoning about how to spread their digital gonorrhea to your thermostat to listen. The frontier red team - a name that sounds like a group of guys who’ve never felt a woman’s touch - tested US and Chinese models to reach this stunning conclusion: putting powerful code on the cheapest, most insecure chips known to man might have consequences. Who could have fucking predicted that? The only thing more pathetic than the threat is the source. Anthropic is out here wringing its hands about AI worms in blenders while the entire industry is racing to cram more ‘intelligence’ into every single piece of plastic with a power cord. They’ve built the fucking rocket, pointed it at a mountain of dog shit, and are now issuing a press release saying the impact trajectory is ‘concerning.’ No shit, you pretentious assholes. The only thing likely to ‘emerge’ by 2026 is a new class of malware that treats your entire fucking home like its own personal orgy venue, and the people who built it will be shrugging and saying they warned us. What a proud moment for innovation.
