Broadcast TV's Last Respectable Grandpa Just Sold His Soul to a Fucking Algorithm

The Television Academy has signed a six-year deal to put the Emmy Awards exclusively on Prime Video starting in 2027, ending a 70-year broadcast tradition so it can die quietly in a data center.

The facts

The Emmy Awards will move to Prime Video in 2027 under a six-year agreement between Amazon and the Television Academy, concluding the ceremony's 70-year run on traditional broadcast networks. This marks a significant shift to streaming platforms, which have increasingly dominated prestigious television categories. The Emmys have aired on one of the four major broadcast networks annually since 1955, most recently rotating between ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. Cris Abrego, chairman of the Television Academy, stated that a single, long-term home will allow for greater continuity and year-to-year development. The ceremony will remain free to watch without a Prime Video subscription. This transition mirrors the Oscars' recent move to YouTube. Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video, expressed optimism that the streaming platform can help increase viewership and attract a younger audience by promoting Emmy-nominated shows throughout the year. Both parties believe Prime Video's role as a television hub makes it an ideal partner. The move comes as many awards shows have experienced declining viewership, with the Emmys drawing around 7 million viewers compared to a peak of over 20 million.

Our take

Well, fuck me with a remote control. The Television Academy, a collection of geriatric fuckwits who still think ‘peak TV’ means a show about a lawyer, has officially bent over and accepted the Amazon-branded dick. The Emmys, that once-proud broadcast tradition where network suits pretended to care about art, will now be a fucking menu option between ‘Reacher’ and a documentary about shitting in space. This isn’t evolution; it’s a hospice transfer. They’ve traded a rotating schedule of actual channels for a six-year sentence inside Jeff Bezos’s content colon.

Chairman Cris Abrego claims this ‘single, long-term home’ allows for ‘continuity and development.’ Translated from Hollywood bullshit: ‘We are too lazy and bankrupt of ideas to negotiate a new deal every year, so we sold the family silver to the one warehouse that always has stock.’ The continuity will be sublime: an unbroken stream of ads for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of the Rings’ interrupting the In Memoriam segment.

And oh, it’ll be ‘free to watch’ without a subscription! How generous of our trillionaire overlord to not charge extra for the privilege of watching an awards show whose viewership has shriveled like a ballsack in ice water. Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video, actually had the gall to say this move will ‘attract a younger audience.’ Yes, nothing gets the teens hyped like an industry circle-jerk where millionaires in velour give each other golden statues, now conveniently located between your diaper subscription and a prompt to rate your last delivery driver.

This is a surrender so pathetic it makes the Oscars’ YouTube move look like the fucking moon landing. The Emmys aren’t jumping to streaming; they’re being flushed into it. They’ve looked at their 7 million viewers - a number that could fit in a decent-sized football stadium - and decided the only future is to become another piece of ‘engagement’ metrics, a blip in a quarterly report next to ‘Cunt Island’ season three. The ceremony will now ‘live’ where shows go to be forgotten, curated by an algorithm that thinks ‘prestige’ means you watched past the opening credits.

So mark your calendars for 2027, you dickheads. That’s when the last vestige of broadcast legitimacy gets the Amazon Basics burial, wrapped in plastic and delivered to your digital doorstep with a receipt for your soul.
