Ben Affleck, Star of ‘Animals’, Says Politics Is ‘Terrible’ and ‘Tawdry’

The actor, playing an L.A. mayoral candidate in his new film, says he’s disillusioned by real‑world politics and won’t endorse any mayoral hopeful.

The facts

Ben Affleck promoted the Netflix thriller Animals (Oct. 2026), in which he portrays a candidate for Los Angeles mayor. While on a press tour, he told Variety that the idea of actually running for office sounds “terrible” and “tawdry.” He added that both Democrats and Republicans feel the political system is failing. On Good Morning America he said the “hypocrisy, corruption and failure” he’s observed has left him “disillusioned” with politics. Affleck declined to name a preferred mayoral candidate, saying he will stay “agnostic” until his film releases. He noted his past activism, having campaigned for Al Gore and Barack Obama, but now feels averse to entering politics himself.

Our take

Well, fuck me sideways, Ben Affleck just stepped out of a scripted mayoral race and into the real one, only to discover it’s a dumpster fire of the same old crap. The guy who spent months pretending to chase votes for a paycheck now calls the actual political arena “terrible” and “tawdry,” as if he’s uncovered some secret Hollywood‑only insight. He blames “hypocrisy, corruption and failure” for his disillusionment, yet the only thing he’s actually seen is a set of campaign shirts, a few selfie‑hungry strangers, and a director yelling “cut!” on a fake podium. No wonder he’s staying “agnostic” until the movie drops – the only endorsement he can safely give is to his own box office numbers. His critique that politics is driven by money, sound bites, and cruelty is spot‑on, but it’s also the same playbook studios use to green‑light a film. The irony? A multimillion‑dollar star complaining about the low bar in politics while his own career has been built on a series of low‑bar projects, from “Gigli” to a Netflix thriller about moral compromise. He’s basically saying, I’m too rich and too famous to get my hands dirty, which is the exact kind of self‑serving, out‑of‑touch commentary that fuels the very cynicism he decries. So, Ben, keep your campaign shirts in the wardrobe, stop lecturing the public from a press junket, and maybe focus on making a movie that actually has a plot worth caring about. The country doesn’t need another celebrity‑politics pundit; it needs policies that work, not punch‑lines from a guy who thinks a mayoral campaign is just a costume change. Go back to the set, you absolute cunt.
