Virginia McVea, the chief executive of the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), faces calls to resign after the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) found that surveys she cited did not support her claim that more than 90% of coastguard rescue officers backed a proposed volunteer model that would end their pay. The OSR stated that neither survey asked officers directly about support for the model, and the MCA could not provide further evidence for the claim. GMB union officer Nicola Savage said the union would consider the claim a deliberate attempt to mislead if McVea could not produce the reports. MP Joe Robertson accused her of misleading MPs and coastguards during three separate meetings. The MCA’s plan to strip coastguards of their pay was a reaction to a court ruling that affirmed officers were workers entitled to minimum wage and holiday pay. The plan was ultimately scrapped by maritime minister Keir Mather in response to criticism. Leaked survey results suggested the MCA had included individuals who indicated they would become less available if they were volunteers, among those supporting the volunteer model.

You stood there, a chief executive of a public safety agency, and told everyone that the very people you wanted to stop paying were overwhelmingly in favour of you stopping their pay. And your proof? Two surveys that, according to the regulator, never once directly asked the officers if they supported your volunteer model. You didn't just mislead, you constructed a whole fantasy support base out of thin air and your own desperate, wage-theft vanity.
