The facts
Liverpool came from two goals down to defeat Villarreal at Anfield, maintaining their perfect record in the Champions League. Villarreal took an early lead through Georges Mikautadze, who capitalized on a defensive error by Virgil van Dijk. The visitors extended their advantage when left-back Sergi Cardona scored after a swift attacking move. Liverpool began their comeback before halftime with a header from Alexis Mac Allister following a corner. In the second half, Ronald Araújo equalized, and Mac Allister scored his second goal, assisted by Rio Ngumoha, to put Liverpool ahead. Florian Wirtz added a fourth goal for Liverpool. Tani Oluwaseyi scored a late third for Villarreal, but Liverpool held on for the win. Villarreal coach Iñigo Pérez conceded, "We weren’t able to handle the emotion tonight." Liverpool coach Andoni Iraola praised Ngumoha's performance, noting his ability to create space and deliver assists.
Our take
Well, fuck me. For about twenty minutes, Liverpool’s defense, led by the £75 million human statue Virgil van Dijk, decided that professional football was a bit too taxing and opted for a lovely game of ‘watch the ball roll past.’ His opening gift to Georges Mikautadze wasn’t a defensive error; it was a fucking charitable donation from a man who thinks his aura clears crosses. Then they let a left-back score. A left-back. The collective brain fart was so potent you could smell it from the Kop.
Thank Christ for the children. The entire ‘comeback’ was engineered by a teenager, Rio Ngumoha, who probably still gets an allowance, setting up the winner for Alexis Mac Allister. The adults in the room - specifically the overpaid, preening dickhead at the back - were too busy having an emotional crisis to do their jobs. Mac Allister scoring twice is the only reason Van Dijk isn’t getting peeled off the pitch by a spatula tonight.
Villarreal’s coach Iñigo Pérez whimpering about not handling the ‘emotion’ is the perfect capper. The emotion in question was the sheer, unadulterated shock of being handed a two-goal lead by a backline having a simultaneous stroke. They didn’t lose to a footballing giant; they lost to a team that remembered how to play after one of its star cunts stopped actively sabotaging it.
Liverpool ‘held on’ because Villarreal are shit. Let’s not dress this up as some heroic fightback. It was a monumental fuck-up followed by a slightly less monumental correction, all sponsored by the sheer vanity of a defender who’s decided marking is for lesser beings. A perfect record built on a foundation of pure, unforced clownery. What a proud night for the Reds. Now someone check Van Dijk for a pulse and a working brain cell. The first is optional, the second is clearly missing.
