Energy and foreign policy analysts predict that Donald Trump’s agreement with Vladimir Putin to temporarily lift sanctions on US imports of Russian diesel will have little meaningful effect on motorists and businesses in the US and overseas. Trump announced the deal on Friday, stating on Truth Social that the agreement to supply millions of tonnes of diesel was essential to reduce US fuel prices, which have risen after his decision to go to war against Iran. The package includes 300,000 tonnes of diesel for immediate release, followed by 500,000 tonnes in November and 1 million tonnes thereafter. This initial 300,000-tonne amount is approximately three-quarters of the US daily consumption, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Trump claimed diesel prices would decrease rapidly, prioritizing farmers, ranchers, and truckers. However, experts suggest the quantities and shipping times are insufficient to impact current high diesel prices, which some link to challenging Republican polling numbers before the midterm elections. Ashley Kelty, an energy analyst at Panmure Liberum, stated the shipments would take about three weeks to reach the US, placing their arrival just before the midterms. The US Treasury suspended sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 7 as part of the deal. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the deal a “weak decision” that would encourage Russia, while Trump blamed Kyiv’s strikes on Russian energy infrastructure for rising fuel prices. Maximilian Hess, founder of Enmetena Advisory, believes the deal’s full terms are unlikely to be met due to damage to Russian refineries from Ukrainian drone strikes, limiting diesel output.
