They Fired the Nuke Watchdogs and Replaced Them with a Robot That Can't Go in the Vault

A GAO report details how presidential orders forced the National Nuclear Security Administration to cut 236 federal employees during a $200 billion weapons overhaul. The agency's genius plan to fill the gap? Artificial intelligence that isn't allowed anywhere near the classified nuclear facilities it's supposed to oversee.

The facts

The Government Accountability Office's report GAO-27-109127, dated October 15, 2026, is a Q&A report to the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on reductions to the federal workforce of the National Nuclear Security Administration.

NNSA is a separately organized agency within the Department of Energy responsible for the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile and nonproliferation efforts. It is carrying its largest workload since the Cold War: a $200 billion, two-decade nuclear weapons and infrastructure modernization effort, overseen by about 1,750 federal employees managing a $25 billion annual budget and roughly 70,000 management and operating contractor personnel.

According to NNSA officials, the agency halted workforce planning in response to presidential directives in early 2025. After hiring in 2023 and 2024, NNSA cut its federal workforce from 1,991 in the first quarter of fiscal year 2025 to 1,755 in the second quarter of fiscal year 2026, a reduction of 236 employees that more than erased the 129 employees it had added in prior years.

The cuts came through a hiring freeze that ran from the second quarter of fiscal year 2025 through the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, with an exception that allowed NNSA to hire 35 national-security personnel; a deferred resignation program that 112 employees accepted, 84 of them retirements and 28 resignations; and, in February 2025, the termination of 163 probationary or trial-period employees, terminations the agency rescinded a month later. Almost all of those employees returned.

The mission-critical workforce fell from 983 to 849, a 13.6 percent drop, with the engineering and architecture group losing 63 people, or 12.4 percent. The Office of Environment, Safety, and Health lost 24.1 percent of its staff. At the field level, the Nevada Field Office lost 21.3 percent and Los Alamos lost 18.2 percent. The agency told GAO it had to reduce some areas of federal oversight for lack of staff, including oversight of the security of nuclear materials: the security office at one field office lost approximately 40 percent of its staff that provides oversight of nuclear material security.

NNSA officials told GAO they are now attempting to find efficiencies using technology, artificial intelligence, and changes to recruiting and hiring. They also noted limitations on how artificial intelligence can currently be used, including limitations on using the technology in classified settings.

The directives behind the cuts include Executive Order 14210, issued February 14, 2025, implementing the President's “Department of Government Efficiency” Workforce Optimization Initiative, and a January 20, 2025 presidential memorandum freezing federal civilian hiring.

Our take

Well, shit. In the middle of the most expensive nuclear weapons rebuild since we were all worried about the Soviets, some absolute cunts in charge decided the real problem was too many people making sure the goddamn bombs don't blow up or get stolen. The National Nuclear Security Administration, tasked with the literal apocalypse, just got 236 pairs of eyes and brains ripped out of its skull because of a presidential memo about 'efficiency.' What a fucking joke.

Let's break down this bullshit. They started by firing 163 people who were on probation, then realized that was a catastrophic mistake and hired almost all of them back a month later. That's not 'workforce optimization,' you dickheads, that's administrative diarrhea. You don't get credit for cleaning up your own piss. Then they bribed 112 others to quit or retire. The result? The office in charge of Environment, Safety, and Health lost nearly a quarter of its staff. The security office watching over nuclear materials at one site lost about 40 percent of its people. So the 'Safety' and 'Security' parts of 'Nuclear Weapons Safety and Security' are now operating with a skeleton crew, assuming the skeleton also took a buyout.

And here's the punchline, the part that makes you want to punch a wall. These clowns told the GAO their brilliant plan to cope is 'artificial intelligence.' Yes, the cutting-edge solution for overseeing the most sensitive, dangerous, secretive objects on the planet is a chatbot. But wait, it gets better. In the very next sentence, they admit the AI has 'limitations on using the technology in classified settings.' Motherfucker, the nuclear weapons ARE the classified setting. The entire fucking mission is a classified setting. You've replaced trained human oversight with a piece of software that is legally barred from entering the room where it needs to work. It's like hiring a security guard who's allergic to the property line.

So the recap is this: The people guarding the end-times arsenal got a 13.6 percent haircut on mission-critical staff. Field offices at Los Alamos and Nevada are down nearly a fifth of their people. Oversight of nuclear material security has been 'reduced.' And the backup plan is a magic box that can't be turned on near the nukes. This isn't efficiency, it's a suicide note written in bureaucratic passive voice. Somewhere, a GAO analyst is politely noting 'challenges' while the rest of us get to wonder if the guy watching the plutonium is now just a Roomba with an 'I Did That!' sticker on it.
