Trump’s Deportation Obsession Let Fentanyl Investigations Collapse, Watchdog Finds

A federal watchdog report indicates that the Department of Homeland Security's focus on mass deportations under the Trump administration resulted in a significant decrease in investigations into illicit fentanyl.

The facts

A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of the Inspector General report, published on August 20, found that Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents spent significantly more time on immigration enforcement than on investigating fentanyl during the Trump administration. This shift led to a 31% drop in hours spent on fentanyl-related criminal investigations, while immigration enforcement hours rose by over 800%. Former HSI agent Eric Balliet stated this represented "mixed messaging at best." Despite the administration designating cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction, agent resources were diverted. The report noted that at one office, HSI agents spent 99% of their time on immigration, leaving almost no capacity for fentanyl investigations. Other issues hampering HSI's efforts included a lack of funding, insufficient technology, and inconsistent referrals from other agencies. The report warned that failure to address these issues could lead to an increase in illicit fentanyl and overdose deaths. In fiscal year 2025, HSI agents spent nearly 2 million hours on immigration investigations, while fentanyl investigation hours dropped to less than 570,000. The report recommended HSI leadership review staffing levels to align with the priority of fentanyl investigations, a recommendation ICE concurred with, planning to implement next steps by June 30, 2027.

Our take

Well, fuck me. In a stunning display of governmental genius, the Trump administration managed to treat the fentanyl crisis like a shitty side hustle while its main gig was terrorizing immigrants. A new DHS Inspector General report reveals that Homeland Security Investigations agents got so busy playing border bullies that hours spent on fentanyl probes dropped by 31%. Meanwhile, time spent on immigration enforcement shot up by over 800%. That’s not a shift in priorities; that’s a full-blown psychotic break from reality.

They designated cartels as terrorist organizations and called fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction, then proceeded to starve the investigations meant to stop it. At one office, agents spent 99% of their time on immigration work. That leaves a whopping 1% for the synthetic opioid that’s killing Americans by the tens of thousands. It’s like declaring war on a dragon and then sending all your knights to harass the village baker.

The report cites a classic cocktail of bureaucratic failure: no money, shitty tech, and other agencies not knowing what the fuck to do. But the core problem is a leadership that thought the best way to fight drugs was to ignore the drugs and chase brown people. A former HSI agent called it “mixed messaging at best.” That’s the understatement of the century. It’s like a fire department showing up to a blaze and spending all day writing tickets for improperly parked hydrants.

And the solution? ICE ‘concurs’ with a recommendation to maybe, possibly, think about aligning staffing with the actual priority by June 30, 2027. That’s a five-year plan to start considering a plan. By then, the only thing being investigated will be the historical causes of our own national fucking overdose tombstone. They turned the drug war into a sick joke, and the punchline is a body count.
