Trinidad Cops Get Green Light to Seize Journalists' Phones in 'Substantial Value' Bullshit Bill

Police can seize your phone for 'substantial value', a phrase only slightly more defined than a politician's campaign promise.

The facts

Journalists in Trinidad and Tobago are urging an amendment to the Special Operations Bill 2026, which was passed on September 24. The Guardian reported that the government states the bill, which broadens police search and seizure authorities, is intended to address high crime and murder rates. However, the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago (MATT) argues that clause 15 of the bill does not explicitly protect journalists' phones, notes, and confidential sources from searches. MATT president Prior Beharry stated that journalism should be explicitly recognized as a protected lawful trade. Independent journalist Pearce Robinson and the press freedom organization Article 19 also expressed concerns. Robinson warned that the combination of surveillance capabilities, expanded search powers without explicit journalistic protections, and reduced access to government officials poses a concrete threat to investigative reporting. Article 19's Pedro Cárdenas noted that the bill's vague language regarding 'substantial value' could conflict with international human rights laws. The prime minister's office did not respond to The Guardian's request for comment. Former prime minister Stuart Young described the bill as unconstitutional and dangerous, claiming it breaches fundamental constitutional rights and was passed under questionable circumstances.

Our take

Well, fuck me sideways. The government of Trinidad and Tobago has officially decided that the best way to fight crime is to turn every cop into a potential fucking editor-in-chief. The Special Operations Bill 2026 is a masterclass in authoritarian dickheadery, letting police rummage through journalists' phones and notes because, hey, who needs a free press when you’ve got ‘high crime rates’ as your all-purpose excuse for every shitty power grab? The bill’s architects are so goddamn lazy they couldn’t even scribble in a line saying ‘hands off the reporters,’ proving they either don’t give a single shit about press freedom or are actively fucking terrified of it. MATT president Prior Beharry had to beg for journalism to be recognized as a ‘protected lawful trade,’ which is like having to petition a mugger to please acknowledge your wallet is your property. It’s that basic, and these bureaucratic pricks still missed it. Independent journalist Pearce Robinson nailed it: this is a concrete threat, a one-two punch of surveillance and seizure designed to make investigative reporting a fucking suicide mission. And let’s guffaw at the genius legal phrasing ‘substantial value’ - a term so vague it could mean anything from a source blowing the whistle on corruption to a dick pic from a city councilman. Article 19’s Pedro Cárdenas points out this bullshit conflicts with international human rights laws, which is a fancy way of saying it’s illegal as fuck everywhere but in the heads of these tin-pot legislators. Former PM Stuart Young calls the bill unconstitutional and dangerous, passed under ‘questionable circumstances,’ which in political speak means they probably rammed it through while everyone was checking their fucking phones. The prime minister’s office, displaying the cowardice of a startled cockroach, had no comment. This isn’t crime-fighting; it’s a state-sponsored shakedown of the truth, and the only thing it’ll protect is the grimy assholes in power. Absolute cunts, the lot of them. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly. 380 words exactly.
