The facts
Kieran L. Ansley, 43, of Niles, a former nurse at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, is charged with abusing a 4-month-old girl in the neonatal intensive care unit. A warrant came in early September: two felony counts of second-degree child abuse, each up to 10 years, and two misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree child abuse. Ansley is free on bond with an electronic tether. The next hearing is in early November. Corewell Health, which runs the hospital, said Ansley was fired after the allegation and that it is cooperating with police.
The girl was born in November 2025 at 23 weeks, weighing 1 pound, 1 ounce, her grandfather Robert Steavens told WOOD-TV. She made it past her due date and was two days from going home in April. Her mother left the unit the evening of April 2 with the baby looking fine and came back about 6:30 a.m. Court records, reported by WOOD-TV and the New York Post, say Ansley got up and "jogged" to cut the family off before they reached the room, and said the infant had "slept through the night."
The mother found bruises on the baby's hands, arms, thigh, buttocks, abdomen and tongue. The tongue was "blue and almost black." Ansley reportedly told her that color had been seen before and was not a big deal. A skeletal survey found multiple fractures, including broken bones in both legs. Court documents say the findings added up to a diagnosis of pediatric physical abuse. Other medical causes were ruled out, police accounts say.
A log showed 32 entries into the room overnight. Twenty-seven were Ansley. Other nurses told investigators the baby had no trauma on their shifts. Colleagues described Ansley that night as flustered, scatterbrained and "in over his head." Defense attorney Damian Nunzio told WOOD that Ansley has spent many years with ICU patients, is "a very good person," and that the defense investigation will "let the truth come to light." The girl, now about 10 months, is home in Caledonia and "doing wonderful," Steavens said. These are charges. Ansley has not been convicted.
The New York Post headline called Ansley a nurse and used "his." It did not say transgender. Court records list the aliases Heather Lynn Adams, Heather Lynn Ansley and Heather Lynn Katt for Kieran L. Ansley, The Gateway Pundit reported from the court file. That outlet also reported a December 2025 Facebook post in a group for trans men in which Ansley said top surgery was coming. We have not seen that Facebook account ourselves.
Our take
She weighed a pound. She made it to her due date. Two days before the car seat, the nurse on the overnight shift jogged down the hall to tell her mother she had slept through it. The tongue was blue-black. Both legs were broken. The paperwork calls that pediatric physical abuse. The lawyer calls Ansley a very good person.
Twenty-seven of the thirty-two times somebody walked into that room, it was Ansley. The other nurses said the baby was fine on their shifts. Then the New York Post wrote "nurse," used "his," and left the Heather Lynn aliases and the top-surgery post for the replies.
The baby is home. The nurse is home too, with an ankle monitor and a November court date. Allegedly.
