The facts
The New York Giants have acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings for a fifth-round pick in the 2027 draft, the teams announced on Monday, Sept. 28.
McCarthy went 27-1 as a starter with the Wolverines at Michigan, won three Big Ten championships, made three College Football Playoffs, and won the 2024 national championship game. He was the No. 10 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. He played in Ann Arbor for Jim Harbaugh; he will now play in New York for Jim's brother, John.
His Minnesota career never took off. Injuries derailed the early part of his career, and struggles on the field contributed too. He missed the entire 2024 season after knee surgery, played 10 games in 2025, completing 140 of 243 passes (57.3 percent) for 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and ran 37 times for 181 yards and four touchdowns. This offseason he lost the starting job to Kyler Murray, whom the Vikings acquired via free agency, and was then named the third-string quarterback behind Carson Wentz.
The Giants needed quarterback depth after starter Jaxson Dart was lost for the season in Week 2. Veteran Jameis Winston is the starter, and Harbaugh said after New York's win over the Titans in Week 3 that Winston would remain the starter even if the team added depth. McCarthy would likely be the QB2 for the Giants (2-1).
Our take
The Vikings are absolute dickheads for this one. They burned the tenth overall pick on a Michigan golden boy who went 27-1, collected three Big Ten titles and a national championship, then treated him like yesterday's piss after he got hurt and threw more picks than touchdowns in Minnesota. Eleven scores and twelve interceptions across ten games is not development, it's a public fucking execution of a draft pick.
Injuries wrecked the start and the on-field results finished the job. He ran for a few scores but completed barely fifty-seven percent of his passes before losing the starting job to a free-agent Kyler Murray and getting buried behind Carson Wentz on the depth chart. That's the franchise's quarterback factory in action: buy high, drive into a ditch, sell the wreck for a fifth-rounder in 2027.
Now the kid lands in New York where John Harbaugh needs depth because Jaxson Dart is done for the season. Jameis Winston stays the starter even after the trade, so McCarthy slots in as QB2 for a 2-1 team that just beat the Titans. Same last name on the headset, different brother calling plays. The Harbaughs have turned into a quarterback halfway house and the Vikings just dropped their lemon off with a thank-you note that says fifth-round clearance.
The comedy writes itself. A national champion who once looked unbeatable in Ann Arbor now holds a clipboard behind a guy famous for throwing to the other team. Minnesota gets nothing but a late pick and the Giants get a familiar face who might never start. That's what happens when you draft for pedigree and then can't teach the kid how to play without shitting the bed every other series.
Call it what it is: the Vikings turned a blue-chip prospect into garage-sale junk and the Harbaugh family reunion is the only winner. The rest is just expensive toilet paper.
