The facts
On August 13, 2026, the Board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts met to discuss whether to close the Center’s main building for renovations. Two documents informed the deliberations: a 163-page report prepared by the company JLL, called the “JLL Plan,” and a short PowerPoint presentation prepared by the Delta Construction Group, called the “Delta PowerPoint.”
On August 18, 2026, the defendants attached both documents under seal as exhibits to the parties’ joint status report, explaining that they “intend to rely on these materials in their forthcoming dispositive motion, but they must take steps to ensure that all sensitive information is properly redacted prior to those materials being made public.” Plaintiff Joyce Beatty moved to unseal both documents in full. As to the Delta PowerPoint, the defendants did not oppose unsealing. As to the JLL Plan, they fought it, saying it “includes sensitive information concerning the Center, a federal public building with high foot traffic in the D.C. area, including structural schematics, floor plans, points of ingress and egress, utility and maintenance infrastructure, and detailed information on restricted access areas.” In their view, “public release of this kind of physical information of a federal public building of this nature would be unprecedented and could pose a material security risk to the building and those within.”
On October 7, 2026, United States District Judge Christopher R. Cooper granted the motion to unseal in part. The Delta PowerPoint will be unsealed in full; the court noted the “strong presumption in favor of public access” to the document, which “has become a flashpoint in these proceedings.” The JLL Plan will also be unsealed, with the defendants given until October 14, 2026 to propose “narrowly tailored redactions”, and the plaintiff responding by October 19, 2026. The judge wrote that “The vast majority of the JLL Plan appears to contain information that is non-sensitive or already publicly available.” He noted that several national media outlets had already reported at least some of its contents and that hundreds of detailed photographs and many building schematics were already on the public docket.
Our take
Fuck me sideways, the absolute cunts on the Kennedy Center board think their renovation pamphlet is a national security secret. These pompous pricks marched into federal court and claimed that letting taxpayers see where the fucking toilets are in a building they own 'would be unprecedented and could pose a material security risk.' Unprecedented, you whining dickheads? It's a concert hall, not a fucking missile silo. The only 'material security risk' here is the public finding out what a bunch of paranoid, self-important assholes are running the place.
Let's savor the galaxy-brained hypocrisy, shall you? These clowns attached the documents to their own legal filings, saying they 'intend to rely on these materials' to win their case, while simultaneously pissing their pants at the thought of anyone else reading them. So the floor plans are solid enough to base your entire legal defense on, but too dangerous for the schmucks who paid for the building to glance at? That's not a legal strategy, it's a fucking fetish for control, the bureaucratic equivalent of a toddler screaming 'mine!' while shitting his pants.
Judge Cooper took a giant, judicial dump all over their pathetic little panic attack. He pointed out the 'strong presumption in favor of public access' - you know, that whole democracy thing these boardroom cowards seem to have forgotten. He noted that national media already reported the contents and the public docket is already stuffed with hundreds of photos and schematics. His ruling that 'the vast majority' of their precious plan is 'non-sensitive or already publicly available' is the legal version of saying 'calm the fuck down, you melodramatic twats.'
Now they've got until October 14 to propose their 'narrowly tailored redactions,' which is code for 'you can black out the combination to the staff shitter if it makes you feel like a big boy.' The Delta PowerPoint gets unsealed in full because even these security-obsessed fuckwits couldn't muster the courage to defend a fucking slideshow. The whole performance is a masterclass in institutional cowardice, a symphony of bullshit conducted by a board that apparently thinks its main job is guarding the secret of where the electrical panels are. What a bunch of useless, terrified pricks.
