The facts
Swedish Social Democratic Party leader Magdalena Andersson announced on Monday that she has abandoned attempts to form a four‑party government after her centre‑left bloc’s narrow election victory. The bloc – the Social Democrats, Greens, Centre Party and Left Party – won 176 of the Riksdag’s 349 seats, a slim majority over the outgoing right‑wing alliance’s 173 seats. Negotiations collapsed because of deep disagreements between the centrist Centre Party and the socialist Left Party. Andersson told reporters, “Based on the discussions I have had, I can conclude that, as things currently stand, it is not possible for me to form a government.” The speaker of parliament is expected to ask another leader, likely outgoing Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of the Moderate Party, to try to form a government. Kristersson continues to lead a caretaker administration that includes the far‑right Sweden Democrats, but the Centre Party has ruled out supporting any coalition that gives influence to either the Sweden Democrats or the Left Party. Prolonged government formation is common in Sweden; it took 37 days after the 2022 election and 134 days after the 2018 vote.
Our take
So Sweden just had an election, and the side that actually got more votes – by a whopping fifty thousand whole people – has officially announced it is too fucking stupid to govern. Andersson, whose Social Democrats and their little friends scraped together 176 seats, quoted herself: “Based on the discussions I have had, I can conclude that, as things currently stand, it is not possible for me to form a government.” Translation: the grown‑ups in the room, specifically the centrist Centre Party and the socialist Left Party, would rather set their own dicks on fire than sit at the same table for five minutes to run the country they just won the right to run. They have a majority. They have the numbers. And they have the collective political will of a sack of wet mice. This isn’t a deadlock; it’s a fucking farce. The prize for this breathtaking display of incompetence? The chance to hand the keys back to the right‑wing bloc that lost the vote. Outgoing Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, caretaker of a government that includes the far‑right Sweden Democrats, now gets a shot – a shot the Centre Party’s Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist has already said she will block if it means any influence for the Sweden Democrats, and she has also ruled out any deal with the Left Party. Her political philosophy is apparently a loud, performative “no” to anyone who might actually need to pass a budget. This is the political equivalent of two toddlers fighting over a toy until the babysitter just takes it away and gives it to the dog. And the real kick in the cunt? This is normal here. It took them 134 days to form a government after the 2018 vote. A hundred and thirty‑four days. That’s longer than some fucking pregnancies. At this point, the Swedish parliament isn’t a legislative body; it’s a taxpayer‑funded improv troupe specializing in tragicomic failure. The only thing getting done is the speaker’s list of people to ask next, a sad game of hot potato with a constitution. So congratulations, Sweden. Your democracy is so robust it can survive elected representatives being utterly incapable of the basic arithmetic and compromise required to pick a leader. The whole system is working perfectly, assuming the goal was to achieve absolutely nothing while everyone involved looks like a complete dickhead.
