Susan Collins Super PAC Flushes $25k Into Portland's Other Toilet

Defending Main Street, a group aligned with the Maine senator, bought attack ads to smear a Democratic rival, but instead paid to show them to over a million people 3,000 miles away in Portland, Oregon.

The facts

The super PAC Defending Main Street, which supports moderate Republicans and is associated with Senator Susan Collins, purchased thousands of dollars worth of digital attack ads targeting Maine Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson. The ads, which criticized Jackson on taxes and the cost of living, were intended for audiences in Portland, Maine. However, data from Google indicates the ads were shown to over 1 million digital audiences in Portland, Oregon, and parts of Washington state, over 3,000 miles away. Defending Main Street spent between $20,000 and $25,000 on the ad buy between October 8 and October 11. Political operative Andy O’Brien, who supports Jackson, commented that the mistake was humorous and that it was clear the group did not understand Maine. He added that he was glad the money was wasted in Oregon rather than Maine. The race between Jackson and incumbent Senator Collins is a high-profile contest in the upcoming midterm elections.

Our take

The geniuses at the Susan Collins–aligned super PAC Defending Main Street have just performed the political equivalent of trying to piss in a urinal but hitting their own shoes, the floor, and the janitor's mop bucket. They spent up to twenty-five grand on digital attack ads to scare the shit out of Maine voters about Democrat Troy Jackson. Instead, their brilliant targeting algorithm decided to show the ads to over a million people in Portland, Oregon, and parts of Washington state. That's three thousand fucking miles off target. You could get a lobotomy with a butter knife and still have a better sense of direction than these clowns. The PAC’s entire purpose is to support moderate Republicans who ‘understand their constituents.’ This move proves they couldn’t find their own constituents if they were handed a map, a compass, and a fucking lighthouse. They literally bought ads in the wrong Portland. It’s like trying to sink a putt and accidentally launching the ball into the next county’s water hazard. Political operative Andy O’Brien, who’s backing Jackson, called it hilarious and said he was glad the money got wasted in Oregon. No shit. This is the kind of campaign malpractice that should get every consultant involved fired directly into the sun. Imagine being Troy Jackson and learning your opponent’s attack budget just got funneled into confusing some West Coast hipster about Maine tax policy while they’re waiting for their artisanal latte. This isn’t just a waste of donor cash; it’s a monument to incompetence, a glittering pyramid of bullshit built by people too stupid to operate a basic search bar. For $25,000, they bought themselves a national reputation as the dumbest fucking hacks in politics. Defending Main Street? More like Defending A Different Fucking Time Zone.
