According to AP News, lower courts dismissed the suit, citing a lack of standing and that it was filed too close to the election date. A federal judge determined that the lawyers had not adequately researched their claims and had acted recklessly in seeking relief for claims that lacked factual support. The fee award is directed at the attorneys, not Lake or Finchem themselves. Parker had argued that such sanctions could discourage attorneys from pursuing aggressive or novel legal claims in the future.
