Supreme Court Pulls Puigdemont's Warrant Out of Its Own Ass

Judge Llarena's bench, having previously decided the amnesty didn't cover embezzlement, now says it does, letting the fugitive separatist leader swan back from Belgium in time for the election after the Constitutional Court gave him a loophole through an ally's case.

The facts

Spain's Supreme Court has lifted the arrest warrant for Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont, who fled the country in 2017 after leading an unsuccessful bid for Catalonia's independence. The court's decision, made by Judge Pablo Llarena, means Puigdemont can return to Spain ahead of the general election scheduled for November 29. Puigdemont had been living in exile in Belgium, accused of embezzling public funds related to the independence referendum. The lifting of the warrant follows a ruling by Spain's Constitutional Court that an amnesty law, passed by the Sanchez government in 2024, also applies to embezzlement cases. This amnesty law, intended to ease tensions in Catalonia and secure political support for Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has benefited around 400 separatists. However, Puigdemont had previously been excluded due to the Supreme Court's interpretation of the law regarding embezzlement charges. The Constitutional Court's decision on Tuesday sided with one of Puigdemont's allies, overturning the previous exclusion. Prime Minister Sanchez welcomed the decision, stating it would help Catalan society "look to the future."

Our take

Well, shit. The Spanish Supreme Court, in a move of breathtaking legal cowardice, has just performed a full rectal extraction of its own previous ruling to let Carles Puigdemont, the embezzlement-accused clown prince of Catalan separatism, skip back into the country. Judge Pablo Llarena, the absolute prick who previously kept the amnesty from covering theft of public funds, has now lifted the warrant because the Constitutional Court, in a ruling for one of Puigdemont's buddies, said the Sanchez government's get-out-of-jail-free card should work for grifters too. So the warrant that kept this dickhead in Belgian exile for years after his failed 2017 stunt is gone, vanished, poof, just in time for him to campaign in the November election. What a fucking surprise.

This amnesty law was always a political bribe, a bullshit deal Sanchez cooked up to buy support from separatists and keep his sorry coalition alive. It's already handed pardons to about four hundred of these cunts. But Puigdemont, the headliner, the guy accused of actually funneling public cash into his vanity independence referendum, was initially left out because, get this, the Supreme Court had the faintest whisper of a spine and said embezzlement wasn't covered. That whisper has now been drowned out by the sound of Sanchez's desperate need for votes. The Constitutional Court's Tuesday ruling, siding with an ally, provided the legal crowbar, and Judge Llarena, that spineless bastard, promptly pried the warrant off the books.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the architect of this whole farce, had the gall to welcome the decision, saying it helps Catalan society 'look to the future.' The future he's selling is one where the guy who allegedly stole public money to fund a doomed rebellion gets to fly home, no cuffs, no fuss, and act like a returning statesman instead of a fugitive from charges that haven't gone away, they've just been politically laundered. The amnesty doesn't prove he didn't do it; it just proves the government is willing to pretend he didn't if it keeps their asses in power.

So here's the new Spanish justice: a Supreme Court that reverses itself on a dime, a Constitutional Court that carves loopholes for political allies, and a Prime Minister who treats criminal charges like bargaining chips. Puigdemont's return is the gleaming, polished turd on top of this shit sundae. He gets to waltz back, his alleged theft of taxpayer euros now magically transformed into a forgiven political expense, while the legal system performs a synchronized tap dance to pretend this is about reconciliation and not raw, desperate electoral calculus. The warrant is gone, the principle is in the toilet, and the only thing looking to the future is a grifter packing his bags for a triumphant homecoming he didn't earn and doesn't deserve.
