The facts
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung announced on Friday that Seoul will not deploy military assets to the Middle East in a way that would involve or enter the war in Iran, responding to pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump. Lee stated clearly, "There won’t be deployment that would involve or enter war. I can tell you that very clearly," adding, "We won’t deploy military assets in any form to that end." He did, however, mention reviewing a greater role in safeguarding navigation in the region. South Korea currently maintains a naval presence off the coast of Somalia for anti-piracy missions. Lee emphasized the need to "do the minimum as other countries do to protect our commercial shipping and crude shipments, and also the safety of our people." Trump had previously criticized Seoul for insufficient support for the Iran war and had scaled back major joint military drills between the two countries. The South Korean government had been considering a possible military deployment to the Strait of Hormuz, an idea that has been unpopular domestically. Regarding trade, Lee said South Korea and the U.S. were nearing an agreement on an investment package, with commercial viability being the main sticking point. He also commented on the possibility of a future meeting between Trump and Kim Jong-un, stating that many factors needed to align for such an event to occur.
Our take
In a move that should surprise exactly no one who has watched Donald Trump treat alliances like a bad buffet - taking what he wants and complaining about the portions - South Korea has politely told the American president to eat shit regarding his request for troops in Iran. President Lee Jae Myung didn’t just say no; he carved that ‘no’ into a fucking monument, stating with crystal clarity that there will be no deployment that would involve or enter war. He might as well have sent a postcard reading, Wish you weren’t here.
The hilarious part is the pathetic scale of what’s left on the table. After this majestic refusal to join Trump’s desert dick-measuring contest, Lee floated the possibility of maybe, perhaps, helping to guard some ships. It’s the geopolitical equivalent of your neighbor asking you to help him burn down a house, and you offering to maybe watch his dog. The sheer chasm between what Trump wanted - a new war buddy - and what he’s getting - a vague promise to look at some boats - is a masterpiece of diplomatic trolling.
Of course, this comes after Trump spent years shitting on South Korea for not paying enough for his protection, cutting joint drills, and generally being the worst ally since that guy who sold you the fake concert tickets. Now, when he actually needs them for one of his deranged projects, they’ve remembered that they have this neat thing called ‘sovereignty’ and a public that thinks getting blown up for American oil is a bad idea. Who could have predicted that constantly insulting and strong-arming your partners would make them less eager to die for you?
So Trump is left holding his tiny, unused military parade, while South Korea quietly mops up the pirate problem off Somalia like a responsible global adult. The only ‘deal’ nearing completion is one where the U.S. gets a firm handshake and a reminder that you can’t bully everyone into your stupid wars. The next Trump-Kim summit is apparently contingent on ‘circumstances aligning,’ which is code for ‘when hell freezes over and this orange bastard is out of office.’ The alliance isn’t dead; it’s just decided to stop playing along with the stupidest kid on the playground.
