The facts
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is set to hear Senegal's appeal on Thursday after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stripped them of the Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded it to Morocco. Senegal are contesting CAF's decision, which came after Senegal beat hosts Morocco 1-0 in the January final in Rabat. During the match, Senegal players walked off the pitch for 14 minutes in protest after a late penalty was awarded against them. Although Morocco failed to convert the penalty, leading to extra time where Senegal scored the winning goal, CAF's Appeal Board ruled two months later that Senegal had forfeited the match by leaving the field. This overturned the result and awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory. Senegal lodged their appeal with CAS on March 25. CAS stated that a final decision will not be rendered on the day of the hearing. The panel, presided over by Gerald Simon, will consider arguments from Senegal, Morocco, and CAF. Senegal is expected to argue that the Laws of the Game make referee decisions final, while Morocco will likely argue that leaving the field without authorization results in forfeiture.
Our take
Let’s get this the fuck straight. Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations by scoring a goal in extra time after the other team missed a penalty. That’s a fact written in sweat and grass. Then, because they threw a collective hissy fit and marched off the pitch for fourteen minutes *during the game*, a panel of useless bureaucrats at CAF waited two entire months - long after the parades and the hangovers - to decide, ‘Oh, actually, you forfeited by leaving. Morocco wins 3-0.’ This isn’t governance; it’s a fucking clown pulling a trophy out of his ass two months after the circus left town. It’s the sporting equivalent of your boss emailing you after your retirement party to say your pension is void because you took a too-long lunch in 2019. The sheer, cowardly delay makes CAF a confederation of absolute cunts, too scared to make a call when it matters, preferring to retroactively piss on a finished contest. Now this farce shambles into the Court of Arbitration for Sport, where three parties will spend fortunes arguing the bleeding obvious: yes, walking off is stupid, and yes, the ref’s decision is supposed to be final. Senegal’s argument is the bedrock of the sport. Morocco’s argument is also a rule. The only true dickheads here are the suits who created this lose-lose-lose scenario where the ‘champion’ will forever be the team that benefited from a boardroom wank. Morocco gets a trophy they didn’t win, Senegal gets stripped of one they did, and CAF gets to pretend its rulebook isn’t written in disappearing ink. The entire appeal is just expensive performance art to decide which flavour of bullshit gets engraved on the cup. The only just verdict would be to award the title to the stadium janitors, who actually cleaned up the mess everyone else made. Fuck this whole pantomime. Melt the trophy and sell the slag to pay for the therapy these administrators clearly need. You pricks had one job: run a football tournament. You failed so spectacularly that you’ve turned a championship into a seminar on institutional incompetence. Bravo, you useless bastards. Bravo. Finally, the CAS panel, led by Gerald Simon, will hear this drivel and not even decide on the day. They’ll just let the wound fester a while longer, because why resolve anything with urgency when you can instead host a three-way circle jerk about procedural nuance? It’s the perfect, pathetic coda to a saga that proves football’s governing bodies are just high-functioning toddlers playing with a very expensive, very shiny shit.
