The facts
The Seattle Police Department overpaid about 900 officers, managers, and civilian staff a total of more than $13 million in retroactive pay under a police contract signed in 2025.
The error: someone at SPD’s budget or HR office used 2020 instead of 2024 as the baseline to calculate what officers were owed for two years worked under an expired contract. Because pay was much lower in 2020, the miscalculation produced much larger payouts.
One officer received $32,000 in excess pay. Around 100 employees got at least $20,000 more than they were supposed to, and another 225 received between $15,000 and $20,000, according to the mayor’s office.
“It’s unclear whether any officer who received a bloated retroactive paycheck reported the discrepancy to SPD.” The city budget office only found out in June that some checks were higher than supposed by five-figure amounts. “But it’s hard to imagine that none of the hundreds of officers expecting a check in that ranged noticed when their payment was $10,000, $15,000, or $25,000 higher than expected. Come on. No one?”
The city can’t just take the money back. “As required by law, the City will engage in bargaining with SPOG over the method by which SPOG members will repay the overpayments,” the mayor’s office said. The police union’s contract is silent on accidental overpayments, and the union could choose not to bargain at all.
Wilson’s office said it learned of the discrepancy in mid-July, shortly before Wilson asked then-chief Shon Barnes to resign. The mistake happened under Barnes and current Chief Operating Officer Sarah Smith, who oversees HR and SPD’s budget office. The city council learned in early August.
Our take
Let’s get this straight: the Seattle Police Department, a collection of public servants who can allegedly notice a broken taillight from a mile away, collectively failed to notice an extra thirteen million dollars landing in their fucking bank accounts. One prick got a surprise $32,000. A hundred assholes pocketed at least twenty grand extra. Another 225 dickheads cashed checks swollen by fifteen to twenty thousand. And the official line is that maybe, just maybe, not a single one of these bastards thought to mention it. What a staggering coincidence that the people paid to enforce rules are so fucking blind to a rule being broken in their favor.
The sheer, weaponized incompetence of the payroll office is a masterpiece. Somebody typed ‘2020’ instead of ‘2024.’ That’s it. That’s the entire fuck-up. Four years of wage growth, vanished with one wrong digit, transforming a routine backpay calculation into a city-wide looting spree. This isn’t a mistake; it’s a fucking heist conducted by a moron with a keyboard. The budget is half a billion dollars, and they’re running it with the numerical skills of a toddler who just learned to count.
Now the real comedy begins. The city can’t just take its money back. Oh no. They have to ‘bargain’ with the police union to ask these cunts to please return the cash they were never owed. The union’s contract, a document presumably thicker than a cop’s skull, somehow forgot to include a clause for ‘oops, we gave you a down payment on a boat by accident.’ So the union can just tell the city to go fuck itself. Seattle taxpayers essentially handed a thirteen-million-dollar gift basket to a gang of grifters and now have to negotiate the terms of its return. It’s like asking a pickpocket to please discuss a repayment plan for your wallet.
The timing is also a beautiful, stinking pile of bullshit. The mayor’s office found out in July, right before asking the police chief to resign. The mistake happened on his watch and under the COO who oversees this shitshow. So the people in charge were either too stupid to notice or too chickenshit to say anything until they were getting shown the door. Either way, it’s a perfect snapshot of civic governance: a cascade of failures, a silence of complicity, and a final, pathetic scramble to clean up a mess that 900 public employees decided to quietly profit from. Fuck every single person involved in this farce.
