The facts
Saudi Arabia said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca on Tuesday evening, September 15, before it entered the holy city's prohibited airspace. Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki said the interception happened at 6:50 p.m. local time and described it as the second Houthi attempt to target Mecca, after a ballistic-missile launch in 2017, according to Saudi Gazette and Reuters.
Saudi authorities issued security alerts in Mecca, Jeddah and other parts of the country. Reuters reported that the alerts were lifted quickly and that officials did not immediately report any impact from incoming projectiles. The coalition called the security of the holy sites and pilgrims a red line and said it would take deterrent measures.
The Houthis denied targeting Mecca. Reuters reported that Houthi political bureau member Mohammed al-Farah called the accusation an outright lie, while AP reported that the group has made several major attacks on Saudi Arabia during a week of escalating fighting. The claim that the drone was aimed at Mecca remains disputed.
Our take
Saudi Arabia says it shot down a drone before it could enter Mecca's restricted airspace, then rolled out red-line language for the cameras. The Houthis answered that the targeting claim is a lie. The hardware is gone, and the remaining evidence is two rival press offices fighting over the drone's intentions like divorced parents arguing about who started the fire.
One side presents a 6:50 p.m. interception as an attempted assault on Islam's holiest city. The other says the accusation is a worn-out lie. Both have discovered the perfect wartime accessory: a statement that cannot be cross-examined because the object has already been destroyed.
Saudi's warning is understandable as a security message, but it also sounds like air defense with a campaign trailer attached. The Houthi denial is just as convenient. If the drone was not aimed at Mecca, nobody has to explain why it was intercepted south of Mecca while alerts were being issued across the region.
The drone missed the prohibited zone. The bullshit landed directly in the briefing.
