The facts
Sami Abu Shehadeh, leader of the Arab-Israeli Balad party, withdrew his candidacy for the October 27 Knesset election after the Supreme Court indicated it would likely disqualify him. The Central Elections Committee had initially voted to remove him from the race following a request by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Ben-Gvir's political camp accused Abu Shehadeh of supporting Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack, citing an article he wrote that called the event an "important historical event." Abu Shehadeh stated that a paragraph in the article was incorrectly worded and that he does not support armed struggle, explaining his intention was to shift the conflict towards a political process. He announced his withdrawal on Friday, stating he had no other choice and would remain party leader. Rights organization Adalah, representing Abu Shehadeh, condemned the court's decision, calling it a severe blow to the right of Palestinian citizens to political representation. Separately, the Supreme Court overturned decisions to bar two Arab electoral lists, the United Arab List and the Joint List, from the ballot.
Our take
Well, isn't this a fucking masterclass in political cowardice and cynical bullshit. Sami Abu Shehadeh, the leader of an Arab party, had to yank his own name from the ballot because Israel's Supreme Court was about to do it for him. The reason? Some far-right dickhead minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, pointed to an article Abu Shehadeh wrote that called the October 7 Hamas massacre an 'important historical event.' So the elections committee, apparently taking its marching orders from the most inflammatory prick in the cabinet, voted to kick him out. And instead of fighting this transparently political fuckery, Abu Shehadeh folded like a cheap suit. He announced his withdrawal, saying he had 'no other choice.' What a gutless performance.
His excuse is even more pathetic than his surrender. He claims a paragraph was 'incorrectly worded' and that he doesn't support armed struggle. Oh, you just accidentally wrote that a brutal terrorist attack was 'important'? Did your fucking autocorrect change 'atrocity' to 'important historical event'? That's the kind of verbal diarrhea you'd expect from a first-year poli-sci student trying to sound edgy, not from a party leader who wants to sit in the fucking parliament. It's the political equivalent of getting caught with your dick in the fan and saying you were just checking the airflow.
So this cunt bends the knee, withdraws, and says he'll remain party leader. What a fucking legacy. He gets to lead a party that now has zero candidates in the race because its boss was too much of a pussy to stand up for his own supposedly misunderstood words. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court, in a stunning display of having exactly one working brain cell, overturned bans on two other Arab lists. So the system is selectively crushing one guy while letting others through, proving this isn't about principle, it's about making an example of the easiest target. Abu Shehadeh played right into their hands. He didn't just lose a candidacy; he gave Ben-Gvir and his ilk a free win, proving they can scare Arab politicians into disqualifying themselves with the mere threat of a ruling. What a useless, spineless capitulation. He didn't just withdraw; he pissed all over the notion of political resistance and handed his enemies a victory wrapped in his own pathetic press release. Fuck him and the horse he rode in on.
