The facts
The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has accused Russia of plotting to murder Ukrainian allies in the US and Europe. On Tuesday, the DoJ charged five men allegedly connected to the Russian Intelligence Services (RIS), accusing them of paying or attempting to pay individuals in the US and overseas to target those perceived to be aligned with Ukraine. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated, It is our job to stop America's adversaries from unleashing violence and terror on American soil. All five accused remain at large. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Moscow would not comment without credible evidence or tangible facts. The DoJ charged the men with participating in a conspiracy to finance terrorism, carrying a maximum 20-year prison sentence. Three defendants are described as high-ranking RIS members, including Yuri Khrameev, a former Russian intelligence colonel, his son Kirill Khrameev, an FSB officer, and Oemis Romagoza Durruthy, a Cuban national coordinating attacks for RIS. The other two defendants, Yaidel Delgado Suarez and Angel Eduardo Castro, are accused of recruiting US-based individuals to surveil and attempt to murder a prominent Russian dissident. One incident involved an alleged plot in 2025 to kill an individual in Lithuania, with Khrameev senior offering $25,000 for the assassination.
Our take
Nothing says 'we are a serious global power' like outsourcing your political assassinations to the same caliber of fuck-up who can’t even manage to whack a dissident in Lithuania for the low, low price of twenty-five grand. The Russian Intelligence Services, according to the DOJ, aren’t a shadowy cabal of masterminds; they’re a bargain-bin death squad running a GoFundMe for terrorism. The alleged price tag for a hit - $25,000 - is the kind of shit you’d see in a Craigslist ‘gigs’ section, right between ‘help me move a couch’ and ‘need someone to test my homemade hot sauce.’ It’s an insult to the entire profession of international skullduggery. For that price, you’re not getting Jason Bourne; you’re getting a guy who will definitely botch the job and then post a TikTok about it.
The lineup of accused reads like a casting call for a direct-to-streaming spy farce. You’ve got a former Russian intelligence colonel, his FSB officer son, a Cuban national allegedly coordinating attacks, and two other chucklefruits tasked with recruiting stateside talent. This isn’t a conspiracy; it’s a fucking family business, and the product is incompetent shitshow. Their big plan, allegedly, was to pay some random asshole in the US to surveil and try to murder a prominent Russian dissident. Not exactly the crisp, clinical precision of a superpower. More like the desperate flailing of a petulant child who’s had all his good toys taken away.
Of course, the Kremlin’s response, via spokesman Dmitry Peskov, is the standard issue bullshit: ‘We won’t comment without credible evidence.’ Translation: ‘We won’t comment until you present us with a notarized confession, a 4K video of the meeting, and maybe a signed copy of the plot outline.’ It’s the diplomatic equivalent of a kid with chocolate all over his face insisting he has no idea what happened to the cake. The sheer, staggering lack of professional pride on display here - from the bargain-basement budgeting to the nepotistic hiring - paints a picture of a state intelligence apparatus that’s less ‘license to kill’ and more ‘permit to mildly inconvenience.’ They’re not terrifying. They’re just pathetic.
