Rubio Blows Another $320 Million on Egypt's Human Rights Waiver Special

The Secretary of State, citing 'national security,' overrides human rights conditions to send more weapons to Cairo, proving once again that 'concerns' are the cheapest bullshit in Washington.

The facts

Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a waiver on Thursday to release $320 million in military aid to Egypt, which had been withheld due to human rights concerns. The Associated Press reported that the State Department stated the waiver was in the interest of U.S. national security. In a letter shared with the AP, Rubio cited Egypt's assistance during the war with Iran, including its role as a mediator between Washington and Tehran. The administration indicated it would continue to raise human rights concerns with Cairo. This sum is part of Egypt's annual $1.3 billion U.S. assistance package and is designated for the purchase of U.S.-made weapons. The AP also noted that administrations from both political parties have previously granted similar waivers.

Our take

Well, fuck me sideways, Marco Rubio has decided that America's national security depends on shoveling another $320 million in weapons cash to a government whose human rights record is a fucking dumpster fire. That's right, the Secretary of State, a man whose entire public persona is a performative wince, just signed the paperwork that says, 'Sure, torture some more dissidents, just keep helping us with Iran.' What a colossal prick. The sheer, unadulterated gall of citing Egypt's 'mediation' as the reason for this handout is like paying a mob enforcer a bonus because he occasionally tells the other gang to calm down. It's the diplomatic equivalent of buying your bully lunch money because he promises not to steal your girlfriend today. Absolute cunt move.

Let's be clear about what this 'waiver' really is: it's a $320 million admission that all those sternly worded 'concerns' the State Department likes to raise are worth less than the piss in a janitor's bucket. They'll 'continue to raise' them, they say. How brave! How steadfast! They'll whisper their disapproval into a silk pillow while the fucking armored personnel carriers roll off the dock. This isn't foreign policy; it's a protection racket with diplomatic plates. Every administration does it, we're told, as if that makes it any less of a moral bankruptcy. It just means the whole system is run by gutless bastards who think human rights are a line item you can waive away when the real business of arming autocrats comes up.

And let's not ignore the pathetic, self-serving detail here: Rubio sent a fucking letter about it. He didn't just do the dirty deed; he needed to document his cowardice for the AP, to frame his act of profound shittiness as some kind of tough, strategic call. 'National security,' he says. What a load of bullshit. National security is what you invoke when you've run out of excuses and need to launder your conscience. This is the price of doing business with a regime that locks up journalists and beats the shit out of its citizens: a cool third of a billion dollars, earmarked specifically for American-made weapons. We're not just ignoring abuses; we're financing the tools used to commit them. That's not a waiver; that's a fucking partnership in oppression.

So congratulations, Secretary Rubio. You've successfully prostituted another principle for a vague promise of help in a conflict. You've taken a pile of cash that could do actual good and turned it into a bounty on human dignity. You're not a statesman; you're a fucking concierge for the arms industry, delivering room service to dictators with a smile and a worthless note about 'concerns.' The only thing this waiver secures is our reputation as the world's leading hypocrites, and your legacy as just another dickhead in a suit who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
