The facts
The Guardian reports that Reform UK activists are expressing concerns over Nigel Farage's plan to allocate £72 million in donations from crypto billionaires Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne. These donations represent the largest sum received by a British political party since mandatory declarations began in 2001. The funds are intended to support campaign managers, professional staff, and expand the party's branch network over the next three years. Reform UK is actively advertising for over 60 positions, including regional branch coordinators, 47 full-time campaign managers, a call-centre manager, local by-election managers, and a councillor welfare manager. Creative roles such as writers and video editors for social media are also being advertised. Some party members question the effectiveness of hiring professional managers, suggesting a greater need for volunteers and expressing concern that ordinary branch members might lose their current roles. The Guardian notes that this spending reflects an effort to centralize and professionalize the party, despite ongoing internal tensions. One advertisement specifically asks applicants to write a 500-word letter in the persona of home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf.
Our take
Well, shit. It turns out that dropping a cool seventy-two million quid into the lap of a political movement historically held together by pub talk and sheer bloody-mindedness is a recipe for the most pathetic internal catfight imaginable. Reform UK, having bagged the kind of crypto-billionaire cash that makes other parties weep into their collection tins, is now advertising for over sixty positions. We're talking campaign managers, call-centre bosses, by-election wranglers, and even a 'councillor welfare manager' - which sounds like a job for someone who hands out tissues after a particularly brutal council meeting where someone suggested maybe the drains do need fixing. This is Farage's big plan: to stop being a loose cannon and start being a professional, centralized political machine. It's the political equivalent of trading in your beloved, rusty old Land Rover for a fleet of company Audis. And the activists are fucking furious about it. Their concern, as reported, is that hiring all these professional managers might not be effective. They think what's really needed are more volunteers. Let's unpack that bullshit for a second. The party has just been handed an amount of money that dwarfs anything seen in British politics since the rules forced them to start telling us about it. It's a war chest. And the loyal foot soldiers' brilliant strategic insight is to suggest they should just... not spend it on professionals? They'd rather have Dave from the Dog and Duck running the Midlands campaign because he once won an argument about bendy bananas, instead of someone who might know what a GOTV operation is? It's the political ideology of the stubborn old bastard who refuses to get a hearing aid, insisting everyone else is just mumbling. The panic is even more beautifully specific. Some are worried that 'ordinary branch members might lose their current roles.' Translation: a bunch of people who currently get to call themselves 'Branch Treasurer' or 'Local Media Coordinator' for a group that meets in a Wetherspoons function room are terrified that an actual, salaried regional coordinator might show up and ask to see a spreadsheet. The horror! The ultimate joke is buried in the job ads themselves. One of these new, professional, centralizing roles requires applicants to write a 500-word letter in the persona of the party's home affairs spokesperson, Zia Yusuf. So, to get a paid job modernizing the party, you must first prove you can perfectly imitate the existing, unpaid spokesperson. It's a fucking parody. They want to professionalize, but the audition is for being a professional impersonator of the amateur setup they already have. They've been handed a blank cheque to build a skyscraper, and the committee is having a heated debate about whether the portaloos should have one-ply or two-ply toilet paper, while secretly hoping they can just keep using the bush out back. It's a masterclass in having absolutely no idea what to do with success, other than to immediately start shitting on it from a great height.
