The facts

Michael Bogle, 38, was released from HMP Wandsworth on 1 October as part of the first wave of the government’s early‑release scheme, which aims to reduce pressure on overcrowded prisons in England and Wales. Outside the prison he told reporters the conditions were “awful” and said people like him should not be in prison “for a long time”. Within four days he stole more than £100 worth of detergent from supermarkets in north‑London, was caught on CCTV, arrested on Tuesday and pleaded guilty on Wednesday. A court sentenced him to eight months for breaching the terms of a previously suspended 32‑week sentence, after he had already served 78 days. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams of the Metropolitan Police highlighted the case in a letter to local politicians, noting that Bogle had been flagged as a high‑risk offender by the probation service, that the investigation required 27 officer hours and cost about £1,887. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson defended the scheme, saying it was necessary to prevent the prison system from collapsing and that early‑release offenders are subject to the toughest‑ever controls, including electronic tagging and exclusion zones.

Our take

What a beautiful fucking advertisement for the government’s genius early-release plan. Michael Bogle, a man flagged as a high-risk offender, is sprung from HMP Wandsworth because the system is so full of shit it’s about to explode. He immediately bitches to reporters that the conditions are “awful” and people like him shouldn’t be inside “for a long time.” His brilliant plan to celebrate this hard-won liberty? To go on a four-day crime spree targeting the most dangerous criminal underworld of all: the detergent aisle at the local supermarket. This absolute prick managed to steal over a hundred quid’s worth of washing powder before getting nicked. He wasn’t plotting a bank job; he was stockpiling fucking Persil. The vision of a reformed man, right there. The Metropolitan Police, who clearly have nothing better to do, then wasted 27 officer hours and £1,887 to investigate this master criminal. That’s your taxpayer money, funding a manhunt for a cunt who wanted his whites whiter. The Ministry of Justice, with a straight face, says the scheme has the “toughest-ever controls,” like tagging and exclusion zones. Brilliant. Their toughest control couldn’t stop a man with a hard-on for laundry pods from making a beeline for the nearest Co-op. This isn’t a policy failure; it’s a farce. They’re so desperate to unclog the prison toilet they’re flushing turds like Bogle back onto the street, where they immediately smear shit on the pavement again. The only exclusion zone that worked was the one around his common sense. He’s now back inside for eight months, having turned a 32-week suspended sentence into a full-blown residency because he couldn’t keep his hands off the fucking fabric softener. The system isn’t just broken; it’s a clown car driving in circles, and every time the door opens, another asshole falls out and tries to shoplift dish soap. What a pathetic waste of everyone’s time and money, all so some government spokesperson can pretend they’re not just rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic using convicted idiots as furniture. Next time, maybe just build a bigger prison, you cheap bastards. Or at least put an ankle monitor that zaps you if you approach the cleaning products.
