The facts
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto sacked Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa and replaced him with deputy minister Suahasil Nazara, Reuters reported on September 14. Three government sources told Reuters that the decision followed a clash between Purbaya and customs and excise chief Djaka Budhi Utama over Purbaya's plan to rotate hundreds of finance-ministry officials, especially in the tax and customs directorates.
Reuters reported that Djaka and tax chief Bimo Wijayanto objected to the rotations and that Djaka took his complaint directly to Prabowo. Djaka had served on Prabowo's former special-forces team. Analysts and investors welcomed the change as a possible confidence boost for the $1.5 trillion G20 economy after months of uncertain policymaking. Purbaya said the replacement was the president's prerogative and denied that internal friction was the reason. Indonesia's State Secretariat confirmed that Prabowo appointed Suahasil as finance minister on September 14.
Our take
Purbaya tried to reshuffle hundreds of officials. Prabowo looked at the paperwork, found the one name he could move fastest, and reshuffled the minister instead. That is one hell of a performance review.
The dispute reportedly started over job rotations in the tax and customs directorates, then climbed straight to the president because the customs chief was one of Prabowo's former special-forces colleagues. In this cabinet, a spreadsheet can apparently become a chain of command, and the chain ends with an ex-commando deciding whose desk still exists.
Purbaya says the firing was simply the president's prerogative. Of course it was. A prerogative is what you call it when the boss can erase your job before you finish explaining the org chart. The outgoing minister arrived with a plan to move the bureaucracy around and left as the most efficiently relocated employee in Indonesia.
The new minister has been handed the nation's finances while investors hope the switch restores confidence. Nothing says calm, technocratic stewardship like watching the finance minister get replaced after an argument with the man who controls the customs gate. The government wanted a reshuffle. It got a magic trick: one complaint up the ladder, one minister down the drain.
