Portuguese Bureaucrats Need 83 Days to Figure Out How to Send a 'Fuck You' Letter

The commission that decides who gets to live safely took all summer to decide whistleblower Rui Pinto wasn't worth protecting, then waited almost three fucking months to tell him he's on his own ten days before the axe fell.

The facts

Portuguese authorities took 83 days to inform Rui Pinto, a whistleblower who has been a protected witness since 2020, that his special protection status was ending, according to documents seen by The Guardian. The special security programmes commission (CPES), which oversees Portugal’s witness protection program, met on July 8 and 9 and concluded that the threat level against Pinto was low and his protection was no longer warranted. Pinto was not notified of this decision until September 30, leaving him with only 10 days before his status was due to expire. Pinto's lawyers stated that he needs to find safe housing and support, and that the risks associated with his disclosures continue. The CPES did not respond to inquiries from The Guardian regarding the criteria for withdrawing protection or the 83-day delay in notification. Portugal's justice minister, Rita Alarcão Júdice, stated that the case would be reviewed and any procedural irregularities would be considered. Pinto's lawyer indicated that an appeal would be filed, citing that the decision was made without hearing Pinto, which they believe goes against the European court of human rights.

Our take

Let's get this straight. A panel of Portuguese security pricks, the Special Security Programmes Commission, sat down in July, scratched their collective ass, and decided the threat level against Rui Pinto - the guy who handed over millions of files exposing corruption - was now 'low.' What, did all the rich fucks and football clubs he pissed off suddenly decide to send him a fruit basket? This wasn't a risk assessment; it was a bureaucratic circle-jerk where the only thing they were protecting was their own pathetic inertia.

Then these absolute cunts decided that the most efficient way to communicate this earth-shattering verdict wasn't a phone call, or an email, or even a fucking carrier pigeon. No, they needed a full 83-day incubation period to hatch the fucking notification. That's longer than it takes to grow a decent tomato. They met on July 8 and 9. They told him on September 30. He had ten days left. Ten days to find safe housing and support after years of living under a shield these bastards just decided to yank away. It's the administrative equivalent of setting a man's house on fire and then mailing him the eviction notice in three months' time, postage due.

The commission's silence to the Guardian's questions says everything. They're a bunch of cowardly dickheads hiding behind procedure, too chickenshit to explain how 'low threat' is calculated when the lawyers are screaming that the risks are very much fucking ongoing. Justice Minister Rita Alarcão Júdice pops up with her promise of a review and to 'consider' procedural irregularities. Consider them? You took 83 days to deliver a fucking decision! The irregularity is your entire department's operational speed, which makes continental drift look like a Formula One lap.

Pinto's lawyer says they'll appeal because the decision was made without hearing from the man whose life is on the line. No shit. Why would they listen to the whistleblower? That might involve actual work, or worse, compassion. The whole system is a grift, a paper-shuffling pantomime where the safety of someone who did the state a service is treated with less urgency than renewing a parking permit. They've given him a week and a half's notice that the protective bubble has burst, hoping he'll just quietly go find a new hole to hide in. It's a breathtaking display of institutional bastardry, a masterclass in how to say 'We don't give a solitary fuck about you' using only government stationery and拖延战术. Fuck every single one of them.
