The facts
Residents of Piddington, Oxfordshire, voted 285-26 on Tuesday to symbolically leave the United Kingdom, with one spoiled ballot, after 312 votes were cast. The result was announced outside the village hall on Wednesday morning. The parish council organised the poll, which has no legal or constitutional effect.
The protest targets Home Office plans to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers at a converted Ministry of Defence site near Bicester. The government says it is moving away from asylum hotels and using self-contained military sites while it works through the backlog. The formal consultation on the Bicester proposal closes at midnight on Thursday, September 17, according to reporting by The Guardian and The Independent.
Piddington is a village of roughly 350 people about 4.5 miles southeast of Bicester. Oxfordshire County Council leader Tim Bearder said the vote showed how strongly residents felt about the proposal.
Our take
Piddington has declared independence the way British villages do: outside the village hall, with a ballot box and a sign. The new country has 285 founding votes, one spoiled ballot and absolutely no legal route around the planning process. The first diplomatic crisis will be explaining to Westminster that the referendum was symbolic but the anger was not.
A village of about 350 people is protesting a plan for 1,256 men, roughly four times the local population. That is the political equivalent of responding to a planning notice by buying a crown off eBay. The parish council has not created a border, a currency or an army. It has created the most aggressively British form of secession imaginable: a meeting, a flag and a deadline nobody can move. The whole fucking country fits in a village hall.
The government says the burden has to be shared, which is a reasonable argument to make before dropping a population bomb beside a village and giving everyone two days to admire the paperwork. Piddington's answer was to invent the Principality of Piddington and hope the county council respects international law. Sovereignty is mostly bins, forms and trying to get the Wi-Fi password from the village hall. Piddington won the flag. Westminster still has the keys.
