The facts
War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced two new initiatives: an Autonomous Warfare Command (AUTOWARCOM) and Project Meridian, an effort to map the future of warfare. AUTOWARCOM, a combatant command focused on AI-enabled robotic warfare, will have purchasing powers designed to bypass oversight. Project Meridian will involve defense contractors and tech leaders in planning the military's future, raising concerns about conflicts of interest. The Pentagon has provided few details, but a memo authorizing Project Meridian states the U.S. must "dominate" in "new domains, new ways of fighting" centered on "artificial intelligence, autonomy, directed energy, robotics, [and] biotechnology." Former defense officials and experts on government contracting warn that both initiatives are prone to excessive spending, waste, fraud, and abuse. AUTOWARCOM is scheduled to be established by October 1, 2027. Gabe Murphy, a policy analyst with Taxpayers for Common Sense, stated that AUTOWARCOM's purpose is to "cut out the oversight that autonomous systems so desperately need by deploying untested autonomous weapons in combat," which he believes "promises to waste a tremendous amount of taxpayer dollars while also endangering service members and threatening the missions they’re tasked with carrying out." Hegseth also announced Project Agincourt, which will prototype a new acquisition construct and clear the path for AUTOWARCOM. Project Meridian will be co-led by Elon Musk, Newt Gingrich, and Palmer Luckey, founder of Anduril Industries, tasked with ensuring America’s long-term military superiority.
Our take
War Secretary Pete Hegseth is a fucking grifter who just invented the ultimate grift. His big plan to keep America safe is to hand the keys to the military-industrial complex over to Elon Musk, Newt Gingrich, and a VR headset company founder, and then disable every brake in the car. That’s not defense policy; it’s a heist with PowerPoint slides. The Autonomous Warfare Command (AUTOWARCOM) is designed to have “purchasing powers” that “bypass oversight.” Let’s translate that from Pentagon bullshit: it’s a multi-billion-dollar slush fund for robot death machines that nobody gets to check on. It’s a wet dream for every defense contractor who’s ever been mildly annoyed by a pesky auditor asking for receipts. Gabe Murphy from Taxpayers for Common Sense called it cutting out oversight for “untested autonomous weapons,” which is a polite way of saying Hegseth wants to deploy kill-bots that might mistake a school bus for a target. What a visionary prick. Meanwhile, Project Meridian is where the real corruption gets its mission statement. You’ve got Musk, a guy who can’t reliably launch a social media platform, and Gingrich, a professional has-been, being tasked with ensuring America’s long-term military superiority. That’s like asking a pack of hyenas to design a better henhouse. They’re being paid to map a future where their own companies get all the contracts. It’s a conflict-of-interest speedrun. Hegseth’s entire legacy is setting up a system where fraud isn’t just possible - it’s the fucking business model. Waste, abuse, and dead soldiers are just the cost of doing business for the new Military of the Future. What an absolute cunt. He’s building a monument to his own vanity with taxpayer money and the blood of service members he claims to support. The only thing this clown will dominate is the leaderboard for most predictable catastrophe. It’s a golden age for war profiteers and a dark fucking age for anyone who gives a shit about where their money goes or who comes home from a war started by a glitchy algorithm. What a useless, dangerous bastard. The only oversight left will be a Roomba with a machine gun, and even that will probably defect to the highest bidder. Fuck this future.
