Paramount’s $110 Billion Media Monopoly Gets a Judge’s Rubber Stamp

A federal judge says it’s a 'fair and reasonable' approach to competition. Because what’s more competitive than letting one rich prick control nearly a third of everything you watch?

The facts

A United States judge has approved a settlement allowing Paramount to acquire Warner Bros. in a $110 billion deal. US District Court Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin gave the green light on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, finding the proposed acquisition to be a "fair, reasonable, and good faith approach to address the competitive harms." The settlement resolves a lawsuit filed by a coalition of 12 states, led by California, which had argued the merger would stifle media competition, potentially consolidating nearly one-third of theatrical releases and basic cable programming. The states agreed to the settlement on September 21, in exchange for a five-year agreement requiring Paramount to adhere to theatrical film release quotas of 30 US releases per year. The deal also mandates separate negotiations for cable providers concerning Warner-owned and Paramount-owned channels. A five-member panel will be established to safeguard the editorial independence of CNN and CBS. However, critics, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, have expressed concerns that the merger places a significant portion of US media under the control of David Ellison, who leads Paramount and whose father, Larry Ellison, has close ties to the Trump administration. Ellison's appointment of Bari Weiss, a pro-Israel media figure, to head CBS News has also drawn scrutiny regarding diminished independence within journalism outlets.

Our take

Well, fuck me sideways. The great American media landscape is now officially a gated community for one rich asshole’s vanity project. A United States judge, in her infinite fucking wisdom, has looked at a $110 billion deal that lets Paramount eat Warner Bros. and declared it a 'fair, reasonable, and good faith approach.' That’s the legal equivalent of watching someone light a dumpster on fire in your living room and calling it a 'fair and reasonable approach to interior lighting.' The competitive harms are so fucking obvious that a dozen states sued to stop it. But hey, they settled for a five-year agreement where Paramount promises to release 30 whole movies a year and maybe not strangle cable providers with both hands at once. What a fucking hero.

Let’s be clear about who's in charge here: David Ellison, a man whose primary qualification is having a dad, Larry Ellison, who sucks up to Donald Trump. This is the genius we’re trusting with a third of theatrical releases and basic cable. His big move for journalistic integrity? Appointing Bari Weiss, a professional culture-war grifter, to run CBS News. So the 'safeguard' for CNN and CBS is a five-member panel. Great. That’ll be as independent as a dog’s dick on a leash held by Ellison. They’ll be safeguarding editorial independence right into the fucking ground.

The whole settlement is a pathetic joke wrapped in a $110 billion bow. Theatrical release quotas? Separate cable negotiations? It’s all bureaucratic bullshit designed to make a monopoly sound like a responsible business decision. Judge Martinez-Olguin bought this 'good faith' horseshit hook, line, and sinker. The states folded because they got a few scraps - a promise, a panel, some paperwork. Meanwhile, Ellison gets to build his own little media empire where the news aligns with whatever his daddy’s political buddies want and the movies are just ads for his own magnificent ego.

This is what 'addressing competitive harms' looks like in modern America: letting a trust-fund cunt buy up the competition after pinky-swearing he’ll play nice. The system is so thoroughly corrupt that a judge can stare at this steaming pile of consolidation and call it reasonable. It’s a masterpiece of legalized looting. So enjoy your new reality, dickheads. Your news, your entertainment, your whole fucking visual diet is now brought to you by one family’s bank account and their shitty political connections. What a fair and reasonable way to run a country.

The VA Wrote Down That Late Surgery Packs Could Cancel Veterans' Surgeries, Then Said Getting Them Faster Had "no value"

The Court of Federal Claims just ordered the VA to redo its $98.5 million sterile-procedure-pack solicitation. The agency shopped by lowest price technically acceptable, wrote into its own acquisition plan that late packs could delay or cancel surgeries, and then told the court a faster delivery plan was worth "no value" to it. Senior Judge Loren A. Smith was not buying it.
