NSW Government Crushes 23 E‑Bikes in First Enforcement Under New Laws

Twenty‑three illegal e‑bikes were shredded in western Sydney as authorities begin to enforce recently introduced speed and power limits.

The facts

On 1 October 2026 the New South Wales government crushed 23 e‑bikes at a wrecking yard in western Sydney, the first bikes seized under powers that took effect in August. Transport Minister John Graham attended the demolition and said the new rules were needed because of unsafe riding on roads, golf courses and even the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Police are reviewing applications to return 13 additional bikes seized in a September joint operation with Transport for NSW. St Vincent’s Hospital reported 361 e‑bike injury presentations between January and July, a 22 % rise on the 296 cases recorded in the same period in 2025; 42 % of those injuries triggered a trauma response and many involved riders who were impaired, riding too fast or not wearing helmets. Dr Ed Lewis, acting head of rehabilitation medicine, described injuries that included fractures, internal bleeding and organ perforation. The destroyed bikes included one capable of over 90 km/h seized from a 14‑year‑old, a food‑delivery bike and several modified bikes. Batteries were removed before crushing for safe disposal and recycling. Under the new law e‑bikes must not exceed 25 km/h and 500 watts of continuous power, with a planned reduction to 250 watts in March 2029.

Our take

Well, fuck me dead. The NSW transport ministry decided the best way to enforce a brand‑new speed cap was to turn twenty‑three illegal e‑bikes into a metallic graveyard. Minister John Graham stood beside a giant claw, watching frames snap in half and tyres pop, while proclaiming, this isn’t a scene from Mad Max. This is where illegal e‑bikes go to die. The spectacle feels less like public safety and more like a tantrum‑driven publicity stunt. Instead of ramping up patrols or education, the state opted for a taxpayer‑funded smash‑party, a bureaucratic equivalent of a toddler stomping on a Lego set. The hospital data is sobering: a 22 % jump in e‑bike injuries, with nearly half requiring trauma care, and a disturbing number of riders impaired by alcohol or drugs. Yet the response is to crush hardware, not address the root causes - poor rider education, lax enforcement and a market flooded with high‑speed, easily tampered machines. One of the shredded bikes could hit 90 km/h and was taken from a 14‑year‑old, raising questions about how such machines end up in teenage hands in the first place. The government’s plan to halve power limits by 2029 is a glacial fix that will take years to make a dent in the problem. It’s a classic nanny‑state move: create a law, showcase a dramatic enforcement act, and hope the public forgets the underlying safety gaps. Tomorrow it might be skateboards or hoverboards that get the same crushing treatment if they step out of line. Until the state invests in real road safety measures - helmet campaigns, stricter licensing, and consistent policing - this metal‑crushing theater is just a loud, messy distraction. Absolute fucking clowns.
