The facts
On Wednesday the British grid operator paid £47.9 million to switch off wind and hydro facilities totalling about nine gigawatts of capacity and to bring gas‑fired and biomass plants online. The payment is part of the daily balancing cost that is ultimately passed to household energy bills. In September the operator spent a record £505 million on balancing, the highest monthly total recorded. Consultancy LCP Delta supplied the data and said the cause was insufficient transmission capacity, especially between Scotland and the south of England. The operator also bought additional electricity imports from Europe via high‑voltage subsea cables. National Energy System Operator (Neso) said supplies remained secure and that timely delivery of new transmission infrastructure could halve balancing costs by the end of the decade.
Our take
What an absolute fucking disgrace. The geniuses running Great Britain’s power grid are so monumentally incompetent that they have to shell out nearly fifty million quid a single Wednesday just to play a game of musical chairs with the electrons. That's your money, you prick, getting pissed straight into the furnace of their own catastrophic planning failure. They're paying wind farms to sit on their arses while they fire up the gas plants they keep pretending we’re moving away from. It’s like hiring a fleet of Teslas and then paying a horse‑and‑cart to do the school run because you forgot to build any fucking roads. The LCP Delta report lays it out with the subtlety of a sledgehammer: nine gigawatts of clean, free wind and hydro got the ‘stay home, we don’t need you’ text because the transmission network is a constipated antique. So instead of using the weather, these bureaucratic cunts burn gas, biomass and beg for imports from Europe. They’ve created a system where the solution to too much renewable energy is to actively pay people not to use it and then burn shit instead. Shivam Malhotra, head of power trading at LCP Delta, points out the bleeding obvious – the wires can’t carry the power. Every time the wind blows, the whole operation seizes up like a blocked toilet, and they have to start flushing cash down it to unclog the system. Half a billion quid in September alone, a new record for wasteful, panic‑stricken dickheadedness. Neso’s calm corporate line that supplies are ‘secure’ feels like a bank vault that charges you a million pounds every time you need a tenner. They admit timely upgrades could slash these costs. Timely. That ship has already sailed, you useless bastards. The ‘energy transition’ they keep jerking themselves off about is currently a transition from burning gas to burning gas while also burning fifty million pounds a day in pure, unadulterated managerial failure. They’ve built the wind farms but forgotten the part where you plug them in. It’s the most expensive game of ‘whoops, we forgot the cables’ in human history, and every household is footing the bill for these power‑grid grifters to learn on the job. What a bunch of clowns.
