The facts
The Justice Department's National Fraud Enforcement Division, along with the IRS and IRS Criminal Investigation, announced a nationwide series of enforcement actions targeting tax fraud on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
Between early September and today, the department's first-ever National Tax Enforcement Surge produced prosecutorial actions against 76 defendants whose alleged and proven crimes intended an estimated loss of revenue to the federal government of more than $490,000,000. Prosecutors returned 23 actions with new charges against 31 defendants, with an estimated intended loss of approximately $350,000,000, and took part in around 39 other enforcement actions, trials, guilty pleas, and sentencings affecting another 45 defendants and nearly $140,000,000.
"Every dollar stolen through tax fraud is a dollar taken from the American people," said Attorney General Todd Blanche, who added that what the surge uncovered "is only the tip of the iceberg" and that "there is no safe haven for fraudsters." Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald said "those who intentionally lie to steal the money of the American people should expect to answer for their conduct in federal court." IRS Criminal Investigation Chief Jarod Koopman said that "When taxpayers evade their legal obligations, the burden does not disappear, it is shifted to law-abiding Americans."
The star of the release is Ephantus Mwangi, a Kenyan national and Missouri businessman sentenced to 51 months in prison for willfully failing to pay over employment taxes to the IRS on behalf of the credit-card processing services companies he owned and operated. During this time, he spent more than $200,000 on loan payments for various luxury vehicles, including a Hummer H2, a Cadillac Escalade, two Range Rovers, two Mercedes, and a Lexus. He also willfully failed to file individual income tax returns for the years 2017 and 2020, and he filed his 2018 and 2019 individual income tax returns after the deadline had passed. The case, in the District of Kansas, carried a $1,500,000 figure.
Also charged: four Texas residents, Duncan John MacDonald, Sarah Duren, Richard Ronald Cayce, and Thomas Weickgenant, with conspiracy to defraud the United States and other crimes for allegedly promoting an illegal tax shelter. According to the indictment, they sold clients a fraudulent trust scheme used to shelter more than $1.5 billion of income, causing an estimated tax loss of more than $200 million, charging fees that often exceeded $100,000 while telling clients they could assign their income to sham trusts to defer paying taxes in perpetuity. And Sherita Booker of Cleveland, charged on Sept. 30 with aiding or assisting in the preparation of false and fraudulent federal income tax returns, allegedly preparing false returns and obtaining large, fraudulent refunds for hundreds of clients using COVID-19 sick leave credits for non-existent businesses and employees, refunds of purported fuel taxes paid for off-road use, and claims for refunds of taxes purportedly overpaid in previous years. The department notes that an indictment, information, or complaint is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Our take
Let’s get one thing straight: Ephantus Mwangi is a thieving cunt. Not a clever one, not a misunderstood entrepreneur - just a greedy, selfish prick who looked at the money he was legally required to withhold from his own workers' paychecks and decided it looked better wrapped around a new Mercedes. More than $200,000 on loan payments for a fucking convoy: a Hummer H2, a Cadillac Escalade, two Range Rovers, two Mercedes, and a Lexus. That’s not a midlife crisis, that’s a full-blown financial felony parade. He needed a six-car garage to store all the bullshit he was full of while his employees' tax contributions evaporated into the leather upholstery of his second fucking Range Rover.
This isn't a simple oversight, you asshole. He willfully failed to file his own personal tax returns for two years and filed two others late. He treated the foundational contract of citizenship - paying your fucking taxes - with the same respect a dog gives a fire hydrant. And his business was credit-card processing! The entire fucking operation was built on moving money, yet the only destination that mattered was the luxury auto dealership. The sheer, unadulterated gall of it is almost impressive. In a nationwide crackdown netting 76 defendants and nearly half a billion in fraud, this clown is the poster boy because his crime is so beautifully, stupidly tangible: your taxes paid for his Hummer.
And let’s not let the other grifters off the hook, swimming in the same septic tank. You’ve got four Texas dickheads selling $100,000 sham-trust packages to shelter $1.5 billion, telling rich fucks they could defer taxes in perpetuity. You’ve got Sherita Booker in Cleveland allegedly fabricating COVID sick-leave credits for phantom employees to steal refunds. They’re all parasites, but Mwangi’s sin is so petty and visible. He didn’t architect a complex scheme; he just took the money meant for the U.S. Treasury and bought a fleet of status symbols. He prioritized car payments over civilization. What a fucking hero.
So now he gets 51 months to contemplate his life choices. No Escalade in the prison yard. No Mercedes to pick up his shitty commissary snacks. Just four and a quarter years to learn how to walk like the rest of the suckers who actually fund this country. Attorney General Todd Blanche says this is just the tip of the iceberg. Well, here’s hoping the next chunk of ice they chip off has some other vain, thieving bastard who thought his need for a Lexus outweighed the entire social contract. Enjoy the concrete, you absolute cunt.
