The facts
A U.S. Marine, identified as 20-year-old Lance Corporal Devin Ballard, has been arrested in Japan on suspicion of robbing and murdering a 39-year-old Okinawan woman. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Ballard entering a hotel with the victim and leaving alone. The Japanese government has lodged a complaint with the U.S. and is demanding full cooperation with the investigation. This incident threatens to revive longstanding tensions over America's military presence in Okinawa, which hosts the vast majority of U.S. bases in Japan. Okinawa native Takemasa Kinjo, whose mother was murdered by a U.S. Marine over 50 years ago, expressed anger, stating the problems with the U.S. military presence have not disappeared. Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi called such incidents "utterly unacceptable." The case also highlights the ongoing local opposition to the planned relocation of the Futenma Air Base to Camp Schwab, with many islanders demanding the complete withdrawal of U.S. bases. Anti-base activist Ai Oyafuso described the bases as deeply woven into the fabric of daily life, making life difficult for residents. U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Japan, Commander Lt. Gen. Benjamin Watson acknowledged the concern and anxiety caused by serious incidents among Okinawan residents, calling them neighbors. Okinawa Governor Genta Koja conveyed the island's outrage, noting the deep regret and anger over the loss of an Okinawan life, especially given previous homicides linked to the U.S. military in 2016 and 2019.
Our take
So the U.S. Marine Corps has gifted Okinawa another of its finest: a 20-year-old lance corporal who allegedly turned a hotel room into a murder scene. Surveillance footage shows this hero, Devin Ballard, entering with a 39-year-old woman and leaving alone. What a clever fucking trick. It’s the kind of subtle, professional conduct you’d expect from an organization that treats a sovereign island like its own personal frat-house annex. The Japanese government is 'demanding full cooperation,' which is code for 'we know you assholes will lawyer up and obstruct, but say it nice for the cameras.' The real cooperation would be packing up every last one of these violent tourists and fucking off for good. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi called it 'utterly unacceptable,' a masterclass in understatement. A dog shitting in your yard is 'utterly unacceptable.' A colonial garrison’s soldier allegedly robbing and killing a citizen is a fucking war crime by another name. But hey, Commander Lt. Gen. Benjamin Watson is on the case, calling Okinawans 'neighbors.' That’s rich. Your neighbor doesn’t show up uninvited seventy-eight years ago, build a wall of artillery in your backyard, and then have his drunk, entitled children periodically murder your family. That’s not a neighbor; that’s a parasite with a flag. The locals are furious, and why wouldn’t they be? Takemasa Kinjo’s mother was killed by a Marine over fifty years ago, and now he gets to watch the same fucking movie with a new lead prick. The script is stale: outrage, apology, promise, repeat. Governor Genta Koja notes the 'deep regret' over the loss of life, just like after the 2016 and 2019 homicides. At this point, 'regret' is just the sound the U.S. military makes while it reloads. The debate about relocating the Futenma Air Base is a sick joke. The problem isn’t the base’s zip code; it’s the fact that the base - and the arrogant, violent cunts it imports - exists at all. They’re not protecting shit. They’re the threat. Semper Fi, you fucking monsters.
