Manchester City's Appeal Strategy: The 'No, The *Other* Oil-Rich Dickhead Paid' Defense

Found guilty of 114 financial breaches, the club's masterful legal comeback is to re-submit the same story an independent commission already called a 'concocted' lie designed to 'obscure and conceal' £830.69m in disguised owner funding.

The facts

Manchester City plans to argue in their appeal that sponsorship deals were funded by the Abu Dhabi government, not the club's owners, in response to being found guilty of 114 Premier League financial rule breaches. The club is appealing a decision by an independent commission that found them guilty of charges related to the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons. The commission rejected the argument that money came from the Abu Dhabi government, calling it an explanation "concocted well after the event in an attempt to obscure and conceal the realities of the disguised funding scheme." Manchester City has stated the commission's decision contains "clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe." The club was accused of artificially inflating revenue through "sham" sponsorship agreements, with Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG) allegedly topping up commercial deal values by £830.69m as a "disguised funding scheme." Premier League rules permit sponsorship by state-owned bodies. City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has cited "irrefutable evidence" supporting the club's innocence. Principal sponsor Etihad Airways, owned by the UAE's sovereign wealth fund L'Imad, is considering legal action against the Premier League, rejecting any implication of improper commercial arrangements.

Our take

So the grand legal strategy, the Hail Mary pass that cost more in billable hours than the entire GDP of Burnley, is to just fucking say it again? After being found guilty of 114 out of 115 charges - a batting average that would get you fired from a fucking tee-ball team - Manchester City’s brilliant appeal is to walk back into the room, point at the same pile of cash, and insist, ‘No, you see, that’s *government* money.’ The independent commission already took one whiff of that argument and called it exactly what it is: a story ‘concocted well after the event in an attempt to obscure and conceal the realities.’ They didn’t say it was thin; they said it was a post-facto fabrication, a lie shat out of a boardroom when the handcuffs were already clicking. And City’s response? To serve the same plate of cold, week-old bullshit, but this time with a little legal parsley on the side. The arrogance is breathtaking. These cunts got caught running an £830.69 million ‘disguised funding scheme’ where their owners’ Abu Dhabi United Group topped up ‘sham’ sponsorship deals. That’s not financial engineering; that’s financial fraud, you greedy, trophy-hoarding bastards. It’s like robbing a bank, getting convicted, and then appealing on the grounds that you meant to rob the bank *next door*, which is owned by your dad, and actually that’s a civic donation. Now they’re wheeling out the old ‘but state sponsorship is allowed!’ chestnut. Sure, rules permit sponsorship by state-owned bodies. They don’t permit your owners to secretly funnel their own cash through a state-owned body’s letterbox to inflate your revenue, you absolute fucking grifters. That’s not a sponsorship deal; it’s a money-laundering scheme with a stadium attached. Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak’s ‘irrefutable evidence’ of innocence is presumably the same dog-eared napkin with ‘we didn’t do it’ scribbled in crayon that they presented last time. The only irrefutable evidence is the 114-count guilty verdict, you pompous, preening dickhead. And the club’s statement, bleating about ‘clear material errors’ and an ‘unsafe’ decision, is the legal equivalent of a toddler screaming ‘I didn’t!’ while covered in chocolate and holding the empty wrapper. It’s the logic of a petulant child who thinks rules are for poor people. Now even their principal sponsor, Etihad - owned by the UAE’s sovereign wealth fund - is getting its state-owned knickers in a twist and threatening to sue the Premier League for daring to imply the deals were ‘improper.’ Of course they are. When your entire brand is being used as a glossy front for financial doping, you get a bit pissy about the implication. The whole spectacle is a monument to vanity and shit-stained hypocrisy: a club built on a foundation of shady cash, caught red-handed, whose only defense is to scream the same transparent lie louder, hoping the sheer cost of their lawyers will make the truth go away. It’s pathetic. It’s the logic of a cunt who thinks wealth is a substitute for integrity. Fuck off and take your fabricated fairy tale with you.
