The facts
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has launched an internal review of the New York Police Department’s use of force, stating that "When the government uses force against a New Yorker, the standard for accountability must be at its highest." This initiative comes more than nine months after Mamdani took office and falls short of several campaign promises, such as disbanding the NYPD's Strategic Response Group and eliminating its database of suspected gang members. The review follows the 2024 shooting of Win Rozario, a 19-year-old who was shot by officers after brandishing scissors during a mental health crisis. The New York Attorney General's office declined to bring criminal charges against the officers in December 2025, deeming their use of deadly force justified. Mamdani's new initiative includes an additional $2.6 million in funding for the Office of Inspector General for the NYPD and will require the NYPD to notify state authorities when officers facing disciplinary charges retire. Mamdani previously pledged to disband the Strategic Response Group, citing its cost in lawsuit settlements and its alleged brutality against protesters. He also promised to end arrests for low-level offenses like public urination and open container violations, arguing it hinders officers' ability to address violent crime. Despite these past statements, Mamdani has retained Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and has not yet fulfilled these specific reform pledges.
Our take
Well, well, well. After nine fucking months of sitting on his hands, Mayor Zohran Accountability Must Be Highest Mamdani has finally mustered the courage to do... an internal review. This is the political equivalent of seeing your house on fire and deciding to form a committee to study the thermal dynamics of flame. What a spineless, posturing prick.
This clown ran for office screaming about disbanding the NYPD's Strategic Response Group, a unit he called brutal and expensive in lawsuit payouts. He promised to scrap the gang database and stop arresting people for pissing in public. And what has this towering beacon of reform actually done? He's kept the police commissioner he supposedly wanted to reform under. He's let every single one of those specific, bloody promises rot. Instead, he's offering up a $2.6 million funding bump for an oversight office and a rule about telling the state when bad cops retire. That's not reform, you dickhead, that's administrative tidying-up while the beatings continue.
His entire justification is the 2024 shooting of Win Rozario, a kid in mental crisis shot while holding scissors. The Attorney General already said the cops were justified. So Mamdani's big, brave response to a tragedy he can't even legally challenge is to launch a fucking review? It's like watching a mechanic promise to fix your exploded engine by polishing the hood ornament. The vanity is breathtaking. He gets to stand at a podium and say the words 'highest standard' while his actual, pledged standards are buried in a landfill of his own cowardice.
He's a grifter in a suit, selling the illusion of change to people who voted for the real thing. He wants credit for 'looking into' police violence without ever having to actually fight the police. It's the safest, most pathetic form of politics imaginable: all the righteous talking points, none of the balls to follow through. The only thing being held to the 'highest standard' here is the public's capacity for bullshit. Mayor Mamdani is a living, breathing testament to the fact that you can say anything to get elected, then spend your term proving you're a complete and utter fraud.
