The facts
New Zealander Stephen Fleming, who was appointed England Test head coach in July, has suggested that the national team should be led by someone from England. Fleming, set to take charge of his first series in South Africa in December, is the latest overseas coach for the England men's team. Since 1999, only two Englishmen, Peter Moores and Chris Silverwood, have coached the Test side. During the same period, England has been led by coaches from Zimbabwe (Duncan Fletcher, Andy Flower) and Australia (Trevor Bayliss), with Fleming succeeding his fellow New Zealander Brendon McCullum. Fleming stated it will be a priority of his tenure to help develop English coaches, acknowledging that "primarily the national team should be coached by a national representative." He expressed gratitude for the opportunity but indicated a focus on developing coaching talent within England. Fleming's backroom team includes former England opener Marcus Trescothick, ex-wicketkeeper James Foster, and former spinner Richard Dawson. Jonathan Trott, an Ashes winner, will also begin coaching England Lions. Fleming plans to invite county coaches and former England players into the setup to foster development within the English game.
Our take
Stephen Fleming, a man from New Zealand who just accepted a massive fucking paycheck to coach England, has crawled out of his introductory press conference to announce that, actually, the job he just took should probably go to an English person. What a visionary. What a prick. He’s basically the human equivalent of a burglar who, after jimmying open your window and loading your TV into his van, pauses to write you a note saying ‘You really should invest in better locks.’ The sheer, unadulterated gall of this cunt is breathtaking. He’s not even in the door yet and he’s already shitting on the very concept of his own employment. It’s a world-class performance in having your cake and calling it a stale, nationalistic piece of shit you wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole. Let’s be clear: this dickhead didn’t ‘suggest’ it, he stated it as a ‘priority.’ His top priority, apparently, is to explain why he, personally, is a problem. The ECB, that bastion of forward-thinking strategy, saw this logic and thought, ‘Perfect, he’s our man.’ They’ve hired a walking, talking admission of their own institutional failure. Fleming’s solution to this self-identified crisis? To surround himself with a bunch of actual English former players in his backroom staff, like a colonial governor hiring local servants to teach him which fork to use. Look at Marcus Trescothick and James Foster nodding along in the background, the living, breathing proof that English coaching talent does exist, you absolute helmet, you just outranked them all. The whole fucking circus is a masterclass in hollow virtue-signaling from a man cashing the check. He gets to play the humble, big-picture statesman while pocketing the salary of the job he says shouldn’t exist. It’s the coaching equivalent of an oil executive giving a keynote on solar power. Fuck off, Stephen. Either do the job or quit and give it to one of the ‘national representatives’ you keep wanking on about. You can’t be both the symptom and the smug, overpaid diagnostician. You’re just a mercenary with a conscience he conveniently discovered *after* signing the contract. What a bastard.
